To coincide with the re-release of The Beatles Anthology, Genesis Publications is delighted to announce a rare archival release connected directly to that creative era.
In 1999, while preparing The Beatles Anthology book for Apple Corps, Genesis commissioned Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann to create a special project celebrating the band’s early years in Hamburg. The result was the two-volume boxed set Hamburg Days, published in 2000 (fully subscribed), accompanied by a striking exhibition print that blended Astrid’s portraits of the young Beatles with Klaus’s expressive drawings and handwritten notes.
We are now releasing 12 low-number, publisher-retained prints from this long-since fully subscribed edition of 250, each signed by Astrid and Klaus and preserved in mint condition in our archive for over two decades.
Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann first met The Beatles during the band’s residency at the Kaiserkeller nightclub in the winter of 1960, while both were studying at the Hamburg Meisterschule.
They became friends with the group and exchanged music, literature, and fashion influences, forming a lifelong creative bond. Together, Astrid and Klaus helped define the band's early aesthetic – from Astrid’s iconic photographic portraits to Klaus’s distinctive graphic style, later seen on the Revolver album and The Beatles Anthology. Their combined work remains integral to the visual history of the Beatles.
The Hamburg Days print edition comprises 250 numbered prints, each signed in pencil by both Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann.
The edition has been fully subscribed for over two decades, and no further prints have been made available. Now, for the first time since publication, Genesis is releasing 12 low-number publisher-retained copies from our private archive – each numbered within the first fifth of the edition (numbers 50 and below).
Created for the original Hamburg Days exhibitions, this print formed a central visual element of the project alongside the two-volume book. The artwork layers Astrid Kirchherr’s photographs of The Beatles – taken between 1960 and 1962 – with original figure drawings and handwritten elements created by Klaus Voormann in the late 1990s. Produced in premium offset lithography on heavyweight Italian art paper and measuring 42 cm x 60 cm (24" x 16.5"), the print reflects the high production values of the original 1999 release. Each artwork is now accompanied by a newly issued, publisher-signed Certificate of Authenticity.
This limited worldwide release represents the final opportunity to acquire a co-signed print from the edition, available unframed with an optional archival framing upgrade.
