CBS Sunday Morning Spotlights The Doors' Anthology

We’re excited to share that Night Divides the Day by The Doors was featured last week on CBS Sunday Morning. In a beautifully crafted segment, correspondent Anthony Mason took viewers back to where it all began – tracing the band’s first steps in Venice Beach and along the Sunset Strip, and exploring the stories that fill the pages of the band's official anthology.

“This is where we got our start,” Robby Krieger said, standing outside the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip. “Nobody had any idea who we were. We were just hoping to make enough to pay the rent.”

“Back then, we weren’t trying to be rock stars,” John Densmore told Mason. “We were trying to tap into something mysterious – to open the doors of perception, like Jim said.” Krieger added, “It felt like we were channelling another world. Every show was a leap into the unknown.”

Night Divides the Day takes its name from Morrison’s opening line in 'Break On Through,' the very first track of the band's 1967 debut album. “It captures that contrast that was always in Jim’s lyrics,” Densmore explained to CBS. “Dark and light. Ecstasy and pain.” The Doors' anthology explores this duality, pairing rare photos, handwritten lyrics, archival interviews, and new reflections from the surviving band members. The result is a vivid memoir, as much about the creative process and the bond between four artists as it is about The Doors' music itself.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of The Doors’ formation. As Anthony Mason put it, “In a time of profound social upheaval, The Doors gave voice to a generation’s hunger for something deeper, stranger, and more real.” The CBS Sunday Morning feature celebrates the publication of the band's anthology and explores how The Doors still resonate today, decades later.
