More than 50 years after it was recorded, a long-suppressed 1972 audio interview with Elvis Presley is finally being heard. The tape forms the emotional spine of Epic: Elvis Presley in Concert, Baz Luhrmann’s new cinematic exploration of the King’s live power and private vulnerability.
Drawn from 59 hours of newly restored footage discovered in the Warner Bros vaults, alongside rare material from the Graceland archives, the film captures Elvis at his creative peak: directing his band in real time, reshaping songs mid-performance, and commanding the stage with ferocious energy. From 'Polk Salad Annie' to 'Suspicious Minds', the performances challenge the later caricature of Vegas excess and reveal a driven, intuitive musical architect.
Threaded throughout is Elvis’s own voice, which is candid, reflective and frustrated. He speaks of Hollywood’s misrepresentation of him, his ambition to take on serious acting roles, and his longing to tour internationally — plans repeatedly thwarted by Colonel Tom Parker’s tight control.
