'Our base has always been London. That's why we wanted to put the scream on there. We weren't number one in Philly (we had Philly for a couple of years, but you only get a US city for a little while), but we took London, man. And when you take London, you take the continent.' – Chuck D
Iconic Long Island group Public Enemy are returning to the UK for the first time in a decade to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in a once-in-a-lifetime show. Marking the 35th anniversary of 'Fight The Power', Flavor Flav and Chuck D are stepping back into the London limelight, this time as headliners and bona fide legends in their own right. If tonight's performance is in any way similar to their first appearance in London at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1987, it is hard to say what to expect. The anticipation was huge.
‘No one knew what the hell was going to happen. We could hear the whistles from behind the curtain, and when we stepped out, we created war on the stage. The atmosphere was like when The Beatles hit the US; we were invading the British Isles! Thirty-five years on, there’s nothing to compare it to: I think it’s one of the great moments in hip hop.' – Chuck D
Their unbridled lyricism, deeply conscious themes and revolutionary sounds have done more than simply age well; they have inspired generations of artists and poets across the decades. Beyond his stellar career in both hip-hop and activism, Chuck D is also a highly gifted artist and painter, much of whose work can be seen in Livin’ Loud. From his early days on Long Island in the 1960s—shaped by civil‑rights and anti‑war activism—to global tours with the rock–rap supergroup Prophets of Rage, this fine‑art edition includes a rich personal commentary alongside over 250 of his sketches, paintings and drawings, offering an unparalleled insight into the life, work and music of one of hip‑hop’s most profound voices.
'In the last six years, I've reverted back into the arts, combining all of these elements in my work, still trying to change the world. This is truly what I want to do. My deepest thanks to Genesis for giving me a place to be able to display all of this through my artwork.' – Chuck D
