The Story of the Sixties

Michael Cooper

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

'The most stupendous rock and roll picture book ever assembled' – USA TODAY

Blinds & Shutters is the story of the Sixties and is quite simply our most famous book, widely regarded as the cornerstone of any rock'n'roll library.

Not only a unique insider’s view of the Sixties through the lens of photographer Michael Cooper, Blinds & Shutters is the defining record of an era, as told by those who were at its centre. From musicians such as Eric Clapton and George Harrison, to artists Andy Warhol and David Hockney, to writers William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, the list of contributors to Blinds & Shutters is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

'Andy Warhol was lovely. He came down and showed one of his films at my house…' - Paul McCartney

The rarest copies of Blinds & Shutters are those signed by Andy Warhol, who sadly passed away during the project's development but is remembered warmly within the book's pages. Today, celebrating 35 years since the production was completed and 50 years of Genesis in 2024, we are excited to release four copies signed by Andy Warhol from our archives. They are presented here in a special Warhol-inspired case, and feature one of Cooper’s portraits of Warhol inset into the book’s front cover. A framed fine art print is also included with each copy, one of the first prints in a new edition from the Michael Cooper Collection.

Exclusively for Genesis subscribers, a handful of further Blinds & Shutters copies are also available: seven copies co-signed by Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, five copies signed by George Harrison, and two by Ringo Starr. Their copies are similarly customised with Cooper’s portraits of these iconic musicians inset into the front cover.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY

Blinds & Shutters - Warhol Copies

'When Michael Cooper was working in the Sixties it was a much more exhilarating and productive period... There was exploration and excitement in all the arts and a feeling that something could happen.' - Francis Bacon

The Sixties was a prolific and exhilarating period of artistic cross-fertilization. For the first time in Britain, the class barriers were really down; everyone seemed to know everyone. Through his association with London's influential art dealer Robert Fraser, the Rolling Stones and The Beatles, Michael Cooper met the artists, writers, poets and musicians of the time as well as the courtiers surrounding them. Many of those who brilliantly lit up the decade on both sides of the Atlantic were photographed by him. He lived the life of his subjects and they trusted him, revealing themselves to him in all their power and their humanity.

The informality and intimacy of these portraits make these pictures incredibly candid, often funny and sometimes sad. Each seems to be the perfect evocation of an era that changed the world forever. Most of Michael's photos are a reportage of what he and his famous friends happened to be doing that day, but there are also the famous commissioned photographs: the Sgt. Pepper's album cover was set up in his studio and he travelled to New York with the Stones to mastermind the Satanic Majesties' Request album cover. Remarkable out-takes from these two sessions are published in Blinds & Shutters.

Over 600 photographs are included, many published exclusively in Blinds & Shutters

Blinds & Shutters - Warhol Copies

It's difficult to separate The Beatles from the fashion or the culture. It was all happening at once, as a kind of whirlpool.' - Paul McCartney

The result of five years of international research and close collaboration with 93 contributors, Blinds & Shutters is a mind-expanding journey through the Sixties, internationally acclaimed as the definitive cult chronicle of that decade. With scores of anecdotes and first-hand narratives to accompany the photographs, the contributors' text amounts to 30,000 words. Blinds & Shutters is therefore a unique collective account of an era by the people that defined it.

THE AUTHOR

Blinds & Shutters - Warhol Copies

'Michael had that perfect ability to take all those pictures without annoying anybody. It would be accepted by whoever was around - people wouldn't know they were having their picture taken.' - Keith Richards

Michael Cooper's superb photographs provide a unique insider's view of the Sixties. He was a close friend of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles - and thus of everyone who was drawn to them. He was never without his camera and while he was simply recording whatever was going on around him every day, he was also aware that he was documenting a historic time with epoch-making people.

Keith Richards, in his foreword to this book, recalls of Michael: 'I remember a camera protruding from his chest as if he was some mutant, and he wore pink woolly socks'.

Michael Cooper died tragically in 1973. During the last stages of his life he conceived the idea for Blinds & Shutters and expressed a wish that it should be published with a little help from his friends. In an astonishing response, 93 contributors (including three Beatles, and all the Stones) banded together to provide the book's text.

Blinds & Shutters - Warhol Copies

Celebrating 35 years since the production of Blinds & Shutters was completed and 50 years of Genesis in 2024, we are excited to release four copies signed by Andy Warhol from our archives.

The publication's large format (360mm x 250mm) provides the perfect medium for Michael Cooper's work, printed on heavy (200 gsm) matt art paper. The edition is limited to 5,000 signed and numbered copies worldwide.

The incredibly rare Warhol-signed copies are signed by at least nine Blinds & Shutters contributors in total. Common to all four copies are Andy Warhol, British pop artist Peter Blake, and legendary musicians Eric Clapton and Bill Wyman. An individually placed photograph of Andy Warhol is inset into the book's front cover, and a Warhol-inspired archival slipcase houses the book.

A framed 16"x20" fine art print is included with each copy, featuring a multiple-exposure portrait of Andy Warhol by Michael Cooper. This archival Giclée print is crafted on 100% Cotton Canson Baryta 310gsm paper and authenticated with a Michael Cooper estate stamp. A handful of further copies are also available: seven copies co-signed by Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, five copies signed by George Harrison, and two by Ringo Starr. When you order, please select your choice of signatory below.

Michael Cooper was one of the few to have had a social and professional relationship with the Rolling Stones and The Beatles simultaneously. With Peter Blake, he created the historic Sgt. Pepper's album cover and his 10-year association with the Stones included shooting their award-winning Satanic Majesties cover. It is, therefore, especially apt to be able to release these copies signed by members of both groups.

The copies are customised with Cooper's portraits of the appropriate musician (Keith Richards, George Harrison or Ringo Starr) inset by hand into the book's front cover. Each book is signed by at least nine Blinds & Shutters contributors in all.

The 368-page book is quarter-bound in leather with foil blocking and silkscreened page edging, and housed in the new commemorative slipcase.
