Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, Lecturer in Mathematics at Christ Church, Oxford — and a fellow don the Rev. Robinson Duckworth, took three little girls on a boating trip. The girls were the daughters of another friend, Henry Liddell, Dean of Christ Church.
