When We Was Fab

Only 750 full leather copies will ever be available worldwide for the true collector

Each copy signed and designed by Astrid Kirchherr

This volume is dedicated to the memory of George Harrison and fittingly the foreword is by Olivia Harrison

'Imagine how incomplete the pictorial history of The Beatles would be without the images in this book.'
Olivia Harrison

'I have decided it is time to create one book in which I am totally involved so that it contains the pictures I like most, printed the way I would print them, even down to the text and design, with of course the help of Genesis. This book is for people who are interested in photography in the Sixties and in the way I saw my friends and depicted them in the best way that I could.

Therefore, this book is me and that is why it will be the last one. The very last one.'
Astrid Kirchherr

Publication date: When We Was Fab will be launched in mid-July at the Estrel Beatles Festival in Berlin, Germany.
Price: £425

In 1994 Genesis was proud to publish Liverpool Days featuring the photographs of Astrid Kirchherr and Max Scheler. The edition of 2,500 numbered copies rapidly sold out and became our fastest selling book. Imagine therefore, the interest that will be generated in the acquisition of this final volume of Astrid's work in an edition of only 750 signed copies.

John Lennon
John Lennon, Hamburg fun fair, 1960 [This is one of eleven folding plates]

At Genesis, the emphasis is always on quality but our aim with When We Was Fab is to surpass the high standards which have become our benchmark. Although collectors may be familiar with several of the images of the early Beatles and other musicians in Hamburg in this book, we believe that these photographs will never have been viewed in such an extraordinary quality of reproduction.

Each of the 41 images in this very large format book is finely printed in tri-tone (two runs of black plus warm grey) and image varnished. The text for the book is printed in gold ink onto a rich black background, following the exact layout created by Astrid Kirchherr. This is the largest format book yet produced by Genesis. Eleven of the images are included as large folding plates.

'In the pictures which I have selected I have tried to capture, not only beautiful faces, but also the look behind the faces - the experiences, what they had each been through. When I took most of the pictures, The Beatles weren't famous at all. They were just young boys with great talent, wonderful humour and intelligence. What amazed me was that, behind all the outfits and rock and roll behaviour, they were very sensible, sensitive young men looking for something new in life, which was exactly what I was doing then in the Sixties. We were so confused straight after the war and we were searching for ways to exist and to accept everything that had happened. I hope that is what you can see when you look at my pictures.'

Every copy of this unique edition is craftsman bound in full leather with black tooling and matching black slipcase.

And finally, to make this numbered edition even more appealing to the serious collector, a photographic image of George Harrison which has never before been printed by Astrid, will be included in a special portfolio, fastened with black ribbon. For a limited period of time Astrid will not only additionally sign this unique photograph but will dedicate each one with a personal handwritten inscription to a maximum of six words.

All stages of production are being overseen by Astrid, for in every sense this is her book.
