Genesis Publications are proud to present Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust, a collaboration between David Bowie and photographer Mick Rock. Published to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Ziggy Stardust LP's original release, Moonage Daydream is David Bowie's first ever book and the ultimate authorised piece of Ziggy Stardust legend.
In 1972, David Bowie released an iconic statement of modern popular music. The LP, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, not only established Bowie as a major musical force, it also provided him with a platform to present a visually fascinating and sexually ambivalent stage persona called Ziggy Stardust.
David and his alter ego quickly became the focus of intense press and public scrutiny. Ziggy, the concept, was a brilliant combination of amazing costumes, colourful make up, fabulous hair, dramatic lighting, traditional mime and, above all, classic music. Character and creator were quickly propelled into music legend as the inspiration for a whole generation.
David Bowie's sharp, often humorous text discusses the origins of his fascinating stage persona, comments on many of Mick's photographs, and overall gives unprecedented insight into Ziggy's stratospheric two-year career.
Mick Rock is widely recognised as one of the most significant and prolific music photographers of the Seventies. David and Mick met in March 1972, just as Ziggy was about to be launched upon the world, and so began a unique working relationship and friendship. Ziggy's huge cultural influence was carefully nurtured and fed to both press and public by an artist and management who realised the extra interest to be generated by holding back open access. Mick Rock was thus the only photographer authorised to record the whole of Ziggy's career from early 1972 to the end of 1973.
'After rehearsing my songs in that funny little basement at Haddon Hall, I breathed in the excitement of knowing that we had a unit that would really start fires. The band rocked like no other at the time; the songs felt strong and effective.'
- David Bowie
Visit the Picture House, which features two QuickTime movies on Bowie. In the first, Mick Rock tell us a little of what it was like to work with David Bowie during the
emergence of Ziggy Stardust. In the second, Mick talks about how he shot David Bowie's pop promos during the Seventies.
For the first time, Moonage Daydream assembles the best of Mick Rock's vast Ziggy Stardust archive. A massive 659 of his photographs are featured (including 314 in colour), many of them seen here for the first time. They capture Ziggy's lifespan in all its excitement: the early English concerts where Ziggy and the Spiders made their name; Mick's classic early images of David at home in Haddon Hall; David's collaboration with Lindsay Kemp in the ground-breaking shows at The Rainbow; the breakthrough tour of the USA; the massive sell-out UK tour culminating in Ziggy's retirement; recording Pin Ups in Paris; and Ziggy's final swansong, the flamboyant 1980 Floor Show. Live pictures are balanced by informal shoots - David backstage, applying stage make-up, travelling, or socialising with musicians and friends including Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Mick Jagger. Formal studio sessions include those for the Pin Ups sleeve and the four pioneering music videos that Mick directed and filmed for David.
'The flash on the original Ziggy set was taken from the 'high voltage' sign that was stuck on any box containing dangerous amounts of electricity. I was not a little peeved when Kiss purloined it. Purloining, after all, was my job.'
- David Bowie
David's elegant Ziggy creation was brilliantly concocted from many different personal experiences and artistic references. Into the creative melting pot, Bowie threw in such diverse ingredients as Japan's kabuki theatre; Lindsay Kemp and his mime troupe; the bizarre and still obscure Legendary Stardust Cowboy; Stanley Kubrick's controversial movie A Clockwork Orange; the costumes of Freddie Burretti and Kansai Yamamoto and much more from all areas of music, fashion, the theatre and art. Ziggy Stardust was the culmination of presentation and performance David had been developing his whole life.
'Writers like George Steiner had nailed the sexy term post-culture and it seemed a jolly good idea to join up the dots for rock. The main platform would be, other than shoes, 'we are the future, now.' and the one way of celebrating that was to create it by the only means at our disposal. With, of course, a rock'n'roll band.'
- David Bowie
A major publishing project, three years in the making, Moonage Daydream features the award-winning graphic design of long-time Genesis collaborator Nicky Page (responsible for The Beatles Anthology, Illustrated Book of the Year at the 2001 British and German book awards). It also includes the most accurate chronology of Ziggy tour dates yet compiled.
'In Moonage Daydream Mick Rock has at last opened up his full Ziggy Stardust archive to reveal a tremendous number of unpublished images.'

GENESIS PUBLICATIONS is an independent British company specialising in publishing signed, numbered, craftsman-bound limited edition books produced to the highest standards in the tradition of the private press. Founded in 1974, it has become the world's leading limited edition publisher in the field of modern music.
Working with many of the world's leading musicians, artists and writers, Genesis has established a reputation for quality which is second to none, and it was this that led The Beatles to invite Genesis to compile, edit and prepare for press their book The Beatles Anthology which was published to acclaim in October 2000.
With loyal subscribers in almost sixty countries, including Rare and Fine Printed Book departments of major libraries and institutions, Genesis limited editions are produced with the full co-operation of each author or artist concerned and their autographs signify their approval and authentication of each edition.
Earlier out-of-print Genesis editions have proved to be highly sought after and have risen significantly in value. Titles such as George Harrison's signed edition of I Me Mine now fetch several times their original publication price when auctioned. Early ordering of Moonage Daydream is, therefore, strongly advised.
