The Photograph Portfolio 2013 offered collectors the first ever chance to obtain Ringo Starr's photographs in a series of museum-quality prints. A few copies remain. Created in small editions of only 25 numbered copies, each print is signed by Ringo Starr as a mark of authenticity.
Taking you on a journey from his first car in Liverpool, to stunning landscape compositions shot as Ringo toured the world with the biggest band in history, in these photos Ringo shares his own unique viewpoint. Intimate portraits of The Beatles capture sides of John, George and Paul that only a bandmate would see.c.1960
'As a drummer, not having a car was pretty difficult. When I had to come on the bus, I had to beg drummers in the other bands, "Let me play your drums." Sometimes they'd let me and sometimes they wouldn't. Later on, when I got my car, other drummers would beg me, "Let me use your kit, man!" and I'd say, "Sure," because I knew what begging for a kit was all about.' Ringo Starr1964
'They're looking at us, and I'm photographing them. The first couple of years, we saw a lot of places from the car because we couldn't go out anywhere. We were just too big time. Everybody wanted a piece of us, so getting out was a big day.' Ringo Starr1964
'John and Paul would write the songs at the beginning, then George started, and then I joined in. I remember ending up in the studio for hours and hours in the end. It was good, but I was the first person ever to put a back on a drum stool, so that I could just lean back a little. There was a lot of hanging-out time and I always wanted to be by the kit, ready if anyone got inspired.' Ringo Starr1964
Florida, 1964
Paris, 1964
'Paul looks very French. It was weird when we first went to Paris to play, because we were used to screaming girls and Paris was full of boys. It was a very deep scream, which was really noticeable to us.' Ringo StarrUSA, 1964
'When we were on the train from New York to Washington, the Press told us why we got such a great reception in America. They said, "Ah, we came to kill you, but you gave as good as you got and we love that." I walked to the back of the train and shot out of the back window. I like shots like this. It's very architectural.' Ringo Starr1964
'Paul and me. Timer shots are always weird because you don't know when it's going to go. When you're in hotels, you just look for things to do and have a bit of fun. The Beatles only ever had two rooms in a hotel; we'd always share. That's when you really get to know each other, when you're hanging out in the same room.' Ringo Starr1964
1966
'I love this shot of John and George listening to a tape. Look at the size of the damn thing! It's a little player and they've plugged it into a radio. It wasn't all great sound in those days; you just got the best that you could.' Ringo Starr1966
'India was so far out. This is the first time we went - not when we went with Maharishi. We stopped in Delhi on the way back from the Philippines, and the British Airways people took us around.' Ringo StarrJapan, 1966
'Photography has always been of interest to me. At one time, we all had cameras. I think we all bought a Pentax in Japan the first time we went there.' Ringo StarrPrinted in Lightfast Giclée inks onto archival cotton rag paper, the Photograph Portfolio is created to be treasured for decades to come.
'We always had a professional photographer to take photos of us, but I just loved taking pictures and I still do.' Ringo Starr.
