LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

The Beach Boys Collection

'It was very exciting for us. We'd all known each other our whole lives and to have people make a big fuss over us was a strange sensation and experience, but we loved it.' - Carl Wilson

On the 3rd of July, 1965, 'The Summer Spectacular' at the Hollywood Bowl featured headline appearances by The Byrds, The Kinks, Sonny & Cher, The Righteous Brothers, and more. But it was The Beach Boys, returning for their first hometown show in nearly a year, who truly brought down the house. Their electrifying performance was captured by renowned Los Angeles photographer Julian Wasser for Life magazine.

Wasser's beautifully composed photograph preserves a halcyon moment in the lives of The Beach Boys, encapsulating the years when the band ruled the music scene in America and beyond. Published in a small collector's edition of only ten prints worldwide, each artwork is personally autographed by band legends Brian Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine.

THE BEACH BOYS AT SAN DIEGO ZOO

The Beach Boys Collection

'With the sound of the dogs echoing in my ears, I said, 'What about Pet Sounds?' That seemed an appropriate double entendre and I guess it worked for Capitol, whose working title for the album had been Our Freaky Friends.' - Mike Love

Unveiling an outtake from the session that produced one of the most iconic album covers of all time, this previously unreleased group portrait was taken during the photo shoot for Pet Sounds at the San Diego Zoo on 10th February 1966.

The band's changing attire and hairstyles, classic striped and plaid shirts and sleek haircuts swapped in favour of a looser fashion aesthetic, reflect their mid-sixties musical evolution. From surf-rock idols to trendsetters of the fresh and distinct California music scene, the Beach Boys' transformation on the cover of Pet Sounds was immortalised by Capitol Records photographer George Jerman.

REHEARSING GOOD VIBRATIONS

The Beach Boys Collection

'I was an energetic 23 year old when I cut 'Good Vibrations'. There was a lot of, 'Oh, you can't do this, it's too modern' or 'That's going to be too long a record.' I said, 'No, it's not going to be too long; it's going to be just right.' - Brian Wilson

Developed over many months throughout 1966, The Beach Boys completed the recording of 'Good Vibrations' in the hallowed halls of Columbia Studios' Studio A, Los Angeles. At that moment in music history, acclaimed photographer Guy Webster was behind the lens documenting The Beach Boys at work.

Initially intended for their Smile album, 'Good Vibrations' was ultimately released as a stand-alone single on the 10th of October 1966, becoming a record that defined an era and a Beach Boys classic that has continued to reverberate to this day. Published in a small collector's edition of only ten prints worldwide, each artwork is personally autographed by band legends Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston.

THE ARTISTS

The Beach Boys Collection

'I think it's the heart that you put into what you're doing that's important. Each member of the Beach Boys puts their whole heart and soul into what they do, and that is probably the saving grace of the group. Few families are together spiritually and emotionally over art.' - Dennis Wilson

The Beach Boys manage to defy decade, genre and form. They cannot be limited to songs about surfing, girls, California, or hot rods. Everything strove to go beyond - perhaps key to the Beach Boys' durability; their ability to go further, to keep going until they reached a place that had not previously been reached in rock and pop music. The band's longevity, experimentation and continuation of influence are without equal.

One of the most critically acclaimed, commercially successful and influential bands of all time, the band are embedded within the cultural landscape of America and loved throughout the world. The Beach Boys spearheaded numerous genres, helped to legitimise popular music, and have had the most Billboard Top 40 hits from any US band (thirty-seven), and today their music continues to be revisited, reassessed, and reimagined.
