Rare books on sale: Alice's Looking Glass
25 Nov 2009
A copy of the book 'Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There' that belonged to the girl who inspired author Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' will be sold at an auction next month.
The signed first edition, a sequel to the 1865 'Alice In Wonderland' publication, belonged to the late Alice Liddell and has an estimated sales price of $US150,000.
Genesis readers will recall Alice's very first book 'Alice's Adventures Under Ground' – which was reproduced here in a facsimile limited edition of 150 copies – was given to her by Charles Lutwidge Dobson (aka Lewis Carroll) and was fully illustrated and written by hand.
At its December 16 auction, which focuses on children's literature, Profiles in History will also sell a copy of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" that belonged to its author, Beatrix Potter. The auction is expected to generate total sales of $US1 million.
