Jim Marshall, creator of the legendary Marshall amps, died
on Thursday 5
th April aged 88. His company, which celebrates its 50
th anniversary this year, provides amplifiers to the biggest names in music
history including
The Who,
Eric Clapton,
Jimmy Page and
Jimi Hendrix.
The 'Father of Loud' began building amplifiers in the early
60s and, encouraged by customer Pete Townshend, developed his own amp with a
rougher, rockier sound than the more expensive alternatives. This amp granted
Pete Townshend's request for something 'bigger and louder' and would help
define the rock guitar sound of generations to come.
'Not only did he create the loudest, most effective,
brilliant-sounding rock 'n' roll amplifier ever designed, but he was a caring,
hardworking family man who remained true to his integrity to the very end.
Marshall Amplification is one of the most enduring, iconic brands of
contemporary music history.'
