Clapton and Richards Howl for Hubert
27 Feb 2012
Hubert Sumlin, legendary blues player and long-time
guitarist with Howlin' Wolf, was remembered at a Memorial concert at the New
York Apollo on Friday, February 24
th. Eric Clapton and Keith
Richards joined together on stage to perform a cover of 'Going Down Slow', as well as
revisiting 'Spoonful' and 'Little Red Rooster' which Cream and The Rolling
Stones covered in the Sixties.
'Warm, humorous and always encouraging, (Hubert Sumlin) was
a gentleman of the first order.'
- Keith Richards
The legendary blues player served as an inspiration for
generations of musicians including Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes,
Jimmie Vaughan, Derek Trucks, and Elvis Costello, who also paid tribute at the
concert. Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were huge admirers of Sumlin and
insisted on paying for his funeral in December (2011). Proceeds from Friday's
concert will go to the
Jazz Foundation to help blues and jazz musicians in need
and continue Sumlin's musical legacy.
