New Paul McCartney and Rick Rubin Documentary Explores The Beatles and Beyond

22 Jul 2021

Last week, a new Paul McCartney documentary aired on the streaming platform Hulu. Titled McCartney 3, 2, 1, it focuses on Paul and record producer Rick Rubin, as they discuss and explore the music made throughout Paul's career, including The Beatles, Wings, and his solo work.

Paul and Rick sit down for a rare, in-depth chat about Beatles classics, including 'All My Loving,' 'Come Together' and 'In My Life,' dissecting everything from the composition and production of the songs to the lyrical content and stories behind them. It's the first time that Paul has spoken so comprehensively about his music, making it a historic show for fans.

The documentary, which is set to be released in the UK on Disney+ on August 25, is split into a total of six episodes. In the first, Paul shares stories from the early days of The Beatles, revealing untold stories about George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr, while the third episode delves into the influences behind the band, from Indian music to Chuck Berry.

Speaking about the show, Craig Erwich, the president of Hulu Originals, said in a recent statement, "Never before have fans had the opportunity to hear Paul McCartney share, in such expansive, celebratory detail, the experience of creating his life's work - more than 50 years of culture-defining music."

Also featured within the documentary are photographs from across the Beatles' career, from their experimental period to their early days in the Cavern Club, some of which are taken by Paul's brother, Mike McCartney. The Beatles' beginnings and the Liverpool of the early 1960s can be seen in Mike McCartney's Early Liverpool. In the book, Mike takes us from his very first photograph, taken with the family Kodak Brownie box camera, through to capturing the Merseybeat scene in Liverpool.

The venues that were at the heart of the city are all featured, including the Casbah Club, the Jacaranda Club, Hope Hall, the Tower Ballroom and the legendary Cavern Club. It is available as both Collector and Deluxe copies (few remain), both of which are signed by Mike McCartney. The book is available to pre-order now.
