17 Mar 2021
In an interview with BBC Radio, Mike McCartney has revealed the process behind the making of his limited edition book with Genesis, Mike McCartney's Early Liverpool
. Speaking with Tony Snell, McCartney describes the joy in revisiting his archive for the book and discovering previously forgotten items, including a letter from Stuart Sutcliffe, who wrote to McCartney from Hamburg.
As discussed in the interview, the book contains his very first photograph, taken with the family Kodak Brownie box camera, as well as a wealth of photographs that capture the Merseybeat scene in Liverpool.
McCartney also explains that the beauty of capturing 1960s Liverpool meant that he photographed the bands in the early years, before their rise to fame.
'This book is a book about the way it was, when none of us stood a chance.' - Mike McCartney
From the Beatles to his own band, the Scaffold, and from the Roadrunners to Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, McCartney captured the local bands as well as the incredible visiting acts that Liverpool welcomed, including Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and Long John Baldry.
