Janis Joplin Honoured on Music Walk of Fame
04 Sep 2023
In music news today,
Janis Joplin becomes the first American artist to be unveiled on the Music Walk of Fame in Camden, London. She will be joined by ten other artists this month, including The Kinks, UB40, and the Buzzcocks.
'It is a really special moment to see our sister being recognised by the Music Walk of Fame. Janis's music resonated with a generation hungry for authenticity. Her legacy is a reminder that vulnerability can be a source of strength, and her voice continues to inspire countless others to embrace their true selves.' - Michael Joplin
The small gathering of family, friends, and media was presided over by Phil Alexander (creative director of Kerrang! and contributing editor of Mojo) and featured a video message from Janis' bandmate Dave Getz and a speech from her brother, Michael Joplin. Lee Bennett, the founder of the Walk of Fame, relayed two messages: one from Pink, 'Quite simply, Janis Fucking Joplin,' and one from Miley Cyrus, 'I am because of her.'
The Walk of Fame will also feature an AR (augmented reality) exhibit, allowing visitors to access career details, photography, and videos of the celebrated artists from their mobile phones. This feature is scheduled to go live later this autumn.
