Genesis is sorry to hear the news of the passing of Fleetwood Mac guitarist and singer, Danny Kirwan, aged 68.
Joining the bluesy outfit that was Fleetwood Mac in 1968, Danny was a pivotal influence on the band's evolving sound. Working together with Peter Green, Danny wrote songs for their experimental third studio album Then Play On (1969), including "Coming Your Way" and "Although The Sun is Shining".
'Danny Kirwan brought to the table a variety of musical influences. He had perfect pitch, with that pure vibrato, buzzy quality. Melodically, Danny was our secret weapon.' - Mick Fleetwood
Danny also featured on Fleetwood Mac's Blues Jam at Chess (1969), Kiln House (1970), Future Games (1971) and Bare Trees (1972). On his song writing skills, Clare Morris (Danny's ex-wife) said, 'Danny was completely dedicated to his craft and I remember how relieved he was that he'd been able to rise to the challenge.'
Although he was asked to leave Fleetwood Mac in 1972, Danny went on to release four solo albums and was one of the eight members of Fleetwood Mac inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
Mick Fleetwood broke the news on Friday 9th June, 'Danny's true legacy, in my mind, will forever live on in the music he wrote and played so beautifully as a part of the foundation of Fleetwood Mac, that has now endured for over fifty years. Thank you, Danny Kirwan. You will forever be missed!'
