50th Anniversary of 'I Shot the Sheriff' Reaching #1
12 Sep 2024
This week marks the 50th anniversary of
Eric Clapton's iconic rendition of 'I Shot the Sheriff' reaching #1 on the U.S. charts. Originally written by reggae legend
Bob Marley, Clapton's version brought the song global recognition, blending his blues-rock roots with Marley's distinctive reggae influence.
'The idea to cover the song goes back to about 1973. I first heard Bob through the bass player I had at the time. I'd always been into reggae, but Bob was the first person I heard singing with a real message. He had a vision; he was like a prophet in a way. It wasn't just music; he was delivering a message.' - Eric Clapton
Released in 1974, it became Clapton's first and only chart-topping single in the United States, introducing millions to Marley's powerful songwriting and helping bridge the gap between rock and reggae.
