50 Years Ago Today: David Bowie and Mick Rock Meet

17 Mar 2022

Fifty years ago today, at one of the earliest performances of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Mick Rock and David Bowie met for the first time at Birmingham Town Hall, England. The two established an instant rapport and Rock went on to document Ziggy's rise and fall.

'The idea of a larger-than-life rock figure struck me around the end of 1970... The main platform would be, other than shoes, "We are the future, now." And the one way of that was to create it by the only means at our disposal. With, of course, a rock'n'roll band.' - David Bowie

'That evening we met, we returned to London together. David was buzzing after the gig and we went back to his home where I interviewed him. Sitting up in the dead of night, David had plenty to say, and I was very impressed by him.' - Mick Rock

The incredible story is told in Bowie's own words alongside over 600 of Rock's photographs in Moonage Daydream, coming soon in a new anniversary edition. Pre-order your copy here.
