The Mutinous Seizure of the Bounty
A limited edition of only 150 copies.
This is a facsimile publication of the precious book which appeared shortly after Bligh's return from the Pacific following the mutiny on the Bounty.
Three editions are known to have been printed: the 1st and 2nd editions published in 1790 and 1791 by Robert Turner, London and a 3rd released circa 1792 by E. Bently, London. The latter has an engraved frontispiece.
We have chosen to include the 1st and 3rd editions in our fine facsimile volume. Both are extremely rare, so much so that our reproduction is taken from the only known copy of the 1st edition while the 3rd edition is not listed among the holdings of The British Library. A copy of Turner's 2nd editions recently changed hands for a fee in excess of £2,000.00.
In a new Introduction which accompanies the facsimiles Stephen Walters discusses the differences between the three editions and draws the reader's attention to an important feature in this book: the first recorded indication of Fletcher Christian's return to Tahiti following his ill-fated settlement at Tubuai.
Only 150 numbered copies of this book are published. Each one is master-printed in black type with colour border.
The binding is in half-leather and marbled sides, with gilt tooling and a matching slip-case.
A previously unpublished oil painting of William Bligh is reproduced in full colour as our frontispiece.
