'Mike Vickers conducted the band in the studio and I was in the control room with Geoff. We fed an instantaneous remix directly to the BBC van and to the world. Geoff and I were having a shot of Scotch whisky when we went on air – 40 seconds early! There was a panic to hide the bottle and the glasses under the mixing console.

The broadcast took the form of a party along the lines of the orchestral sequence for ‘A Day In The Life’ with many of the same friends present. At the end of the song, some of the friends danced the conga around the studio.' GEORGE MARTIN
