CALIFORNIA DREAMING LOS ANGELES PARTY

November 15th was certainly a night to remember for all those invited by Genesis Publications to celebrate the publication of California Dreaming with special guest Henry Diltz. The private party was held at Genesis colleague Rona Elliot's beautiful Bel Air house, which was filled with Henry's prints and the smell of incense, while guests ate at tie-dye covered tables under the stars.

Many of Henry's dearest friends, as well as several of the contributors to the book - Graham Nash, Michelle Phillips, Ned Doheny, Micky Dolenz, Paul Zollo and Renais Jeanne-Hill - turned up to honour not only Henry's friendship but also his significant contribution to the music history of southern California.

Also putting in an appearance were Brian Wilson, Joe Walsh, Ringo Starr with his wife Barbara Bach and Olivia Harrison. Ringo and Olivia were delighted when Henry presented them with complimentary copies of his book.

Several copies of the book were sold which Henry took time to personalise in his impressively-neat hand-writing. Rona Elliot said a few words to honour Henry, describing the evening as a "Henry Love-fest", which spurred Graham Nash, Micky Dolenz and Michelle Phillips to stand up and make impromptu speeches of their own about the much-loved photographer.

BEVERLY HILLS TASCHEN STORE - DILTZ OPENING

On Wednesday November 14th the Beverly Hills Taschen store held its own launch of California Dreaming, where contributors Gerry Beckley, who had flown in hours earlier from a sell-out UK tour with his band America, and Graham Nash (Hollies, CSN, CSN&Y) were among those in attendance. After personalising copies of the book, Henry reminisced about the music scene that inspired the photographs with popular-culture critic Michael Walker, author of Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll's Legendary Neighbourhood. After the talk guests were treated to delicious tequila and cranberry cocktails and tortilla with guacamole and salsa dips.

Our thanks to Taschen for hosting the event at their wonderful Beverly Hills store and to everyone for coming.

SUPPOSITIONS ON DYLAN

Since the premiere in Venice on the 21st September, the long-awaited biopic I'm Not There, Suppositions on a Film Concerning Dylan, written and directed by Todd Haynes, has been received as an enticingly enigmatic film about an equally enigmatic songwriter.

Award-winning director Haynes has attempted to dissect Dylan's persona during pivotal phases of his career using six different fictional characters ranging from the 11-year-old boy 'Woody', played by Marcus Carl Franklin, to the reclusive 'Billy', played by Richard Gere. Particular acclaim has been reserved for Cate Blanchett's award-winning performance (Best Actress, Venice Film Festival), of 'Jude', a portrayal of Dylan in the mid-Sixties during the time he recorded the ground-breaking Blonde on Blonde album and photographer Jerry Schatzberg staged a series of unprecedented photo shoots with him, including the Blonde on Blonde album cover.

Earlier this year, Haynes was in the critic's seat providing his own suppositions on Shatzberg's photographs of Dylan in Genesis Publications' Thin Wild Mercury: "This stunning collection of Schatzberg's most famous sessions is a must for any serious Dylan collector. Before the days of digital photography and airbrush, these exquisite reproductions bring out texture and detail like never before seen. Their powerful simplicity, beauty and humour is sure to dazzle fans and novices alike." - Todd Haynes

I'm Not There is due for general release in the USA on the 21st of November and the UK on the 21st of December, and, after receiving the Grand Jury Prize in Venice, is tipped for further accolades.

Please click here to read more or buy your copy of Thin Wild Mercury.

PAUL SMITH LAUNCHES FROM STATION TO STATION

From Station To Station: Travels With Bowie, 1973-1976 received its official US launch on November 1 at the flagship New York store of British designer Paul Smith.

It was a memorable night that saw the store packed with guests, including the author Geoff MacCormack who was bowled over by the reception he and his book received.

As well as the book, 16 limited edition prints were also on display. These 10x8 inch prints have been made especially for Genesis and each is a limited edition of 5, signed by Geoff.

Paul Smith is so delighted with From Station To Station that the whole store-front is dedicated to it, except for one window dedicated to other classic Genesis titles. And the window dressers have worked exactly the sort of magic worthy of a Genesis limited edition.

You can see the magnificent display throughout the whole of November at Paul Smith, 108 Fifth Avenue, New York where you can also view and buy copies of the book and the limited edition prints.

REUNITED - A BAND OF BROTHERS

Reunited - A Band of Brothers reminisce over the first photo selection for Genesis' latest, signed, limited edition historical volume.

The veterans that comprise this most famed Allied company of the second world war - Easy Company - were reunited during the first week of October for three days in Minneapolis, MN, for their 61st annual reunion .

With moving memories of fallen comrades and colourful recollections of an elite outfit, the company of men immortalised by Steven Ambrose, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks as a 'Band of Brothers', took an opportunity to survey the initial photo selection for the coveted historical volume due out in 2008.

The archive of photographs features unseen images from the phenomenal campaigns of Easy Company, from training in America, to combat in the European theatre; including the personal negatives of Major Richard D Winters and some of the most remarkable black and white, and colour kodachrome photographs to have come out of the war.

The book will also feature original memorabilia, including maps with Major Winters' notes and strategies; letters sent home to loved ones from the front lines; official records of operations; and a host of valuable reproductions. Bound in black leather and covered with original M1942 paratrooper jump-jacket material, Easy Co, 506th PIR In Photographs, will provide a highly collectable testament to some of the most audacious and defining actions of WWII.

COLIN JONES - THE WHO 1966

Colin Jones, one of post-war Britain's most celebrated and prolific photographers, is displaying a selection of his seminal images of The Who in an exhibition entitled 'The Who 1966'. These images are some of the most iconic ever taken of the guitar-trashing and most visually intense bands in the world, showing true legends being formed.

Hoopers Gallery, London (in association with Genesis Publications) will be running the exhibition from Thursday 18th October until 30th November 2007, where you will be given the opportunity to view and purchase these limited-run prints. Click here for more information.

Current Genesis subscribers will already be aware of and enjoying our two special limited editions, Maximum Who and The Who Live.

The Who Live originally sold out on publication but Genesis has since been able to recover a few copies and make them available for our subscribers. Maximum Who is the follow up to The Who Live and features rare and spectacular documentary photos of The Who in the Sixties, including those of Colin Jones which inspired the book in the first place.

The Who Live - Charting the band's performances from the Sixties, with emphasis on the legendary tours of the Seventies when the band were labelled the greatest live rock'n'roll band in the world. This set of extraordinary photographs, most previously unpublished, includes the last shots of Keith Moon playing live, as well as many revealing and intimate images of the band at the height of its powers.

Maximum Who - For the first time in one book, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle and Pete Townshend have all written text. Together with Ross Halfin's inspired image selection Maximum Who presents the band's early years, from 1964 with the arrival of drummer Keith Moon, to 1969 with The Who on the cusp of stellar success recording and rehearsing Tommy.

BOB MARLEY'S EXODUS, 1977-2007:
30 YEARS OF REBEL MUSIC

To mark the 30th anniversary of the release of one of the greatest albums of all time - Bob Marley's Exodus - Genesis Publications is releasing 30 anniversary copies of Kate Simon's acclaimed photo book, Rebel Music: Bob Marley and Roots Reggae.

Rebel Music: Bob Marley and Roots Reggae is a limited edition book of just 2,000 copies featuring over 400 photos - most of which have never been published before - drawn from Kate Simon's extensive archive.

"A fellow worker, she could be found in the trenches with her trusted black body Nikon F-2. She did not seek to expose, but to shoot the picture her subject pictured - the joyful, mutable moments. How fortunate we are to have these images, for they were taken at a time when we were happily swept by a wave, a surge of human optimism, that was infused in the humble heart of a music dubbed 'reggae'."
Patti Smith (from her Introduction)

The 30 anniversary copies - that form part of the limited edition of 2000 - each come with an additional 10x8 inch, silver-gelatin archival print, unique to every copy and signed by the photographer. These prints were used in the actual making of the book.

As these are very limited we ask that you call one of the helpful Genesis staff to order your copy or for more information.

GORDON RAMSEY - HERO OR VILLAIN?

Whilst filming at the luxurious Drakes Hotel in Brighton (UK), international chef Gordon Ramsey chanced upon a set of David Steen's photographs in the lobby of this beautiful townhouse hotel. Ramsey, well known for his forthright attitude along with his culinary expertise, took to the prints immediately and bought all seven.

The prints featured Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Robert Mitchum, Oliver Reed, Lee Marvin, Richard Harris and Rudolf Nureyev. These, as you may imagine, are just a tiny fraction of the cultural icons that David Steen has photographed during his illustrious career. In 2005 Genesis were fortunate enough to be given unprecedented access to his full archive to produce a 'biography' of his work which features many more astounding images additionally captioned with David's own words.

BEATLES MONUMENT IN HAMBURG NOT THE BEST

A monument dedicated to The Beatles, currently under construction in the German city of Hamburg, is causing controversy among music fans. The city that helped launch The Beatles to international fame is creating a steel tribute to the band rumoured to cost upwards of £300,000.

The statue will represent the original band members from the time they lived and played on the city's famous Reeperbahn at various times between 1960 and 1962, including Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe who died in Hamburg in April 1962.

Pete Best, who played drums for The Beatles for the majority of their Hamburg shows, is neglected from the commemoration in favour of Ringo Starr who joined The Beatles for their fifth residency in the city in December 1962. Ringo, of course, had until that time been in Hamburg playing with Rory Storm and The Hurricanes. Apparently some fans feel that Pete Best's early contributions shouldn't have been ignored.

You can enjoy the story of The Beatles' early years in Hamburg as told through the words and images of Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr with Hamburg Days - the limited, signed two edition set from Genesis Publications. Which also features an introduction by George Harrison.

These images are taken from Hamburg Days (Pete Best is shown on the left) - click here to read more and to order your copy.

This exhibition promises to be a landmark show with prints available at various sizes and in very limited supply.

THE FESTIVAL SEASON STARTS WITH A (BIGGER) BANG

hendrix

The festival season is now well under way in Britain and last weekend saw the return of the legendary Isle Of Wight Festival. Headlining were The Rolling Stones and they didn't disappoint. Kick-starting their first UK festival date in three decades with the classic 'Start Me Up' they proceeded to blow away other, younger, performers on the bill and prove they're still the best rock 'n' roll band on the planet.

The Isle Of Wight holds a special place in festival folklore as, in 1970, it played host to Jimi Hendrix's penultimate gig. Some of the photos of his set that night have become iconic and rightly feature in Classic Hendrix, The Ultimate Hendrix Experience.

Also included within those pages are photos from another legendary festival, Monterey Pop, where Jimi famously set fire to his guitar. Monterey Pop Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary in July and, as well as the incendiary set by Hendrix, will forever be remembered for legendary performances by, among others, Ravi Shankar and The Who.

There are many more festivals to enjoy over the coming months and as they progress we will be taking a look back on the more memorable performances through the images and dialogue of the rich Genesis back catalogue.

UNSEEN BEATLES - FRANK HERRMANN

Friday 1st June was the 40th Anniversary of The Beatles' seminal album 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band'. This year Genesis Publications is celebrating the anniversary with the publication of 'Summer of Love', a highly sought-after limited edition that is personally signed by Sir George Martin. This wonderful, colourful edition invites you to peak behind the mixing desks at the infamous Abbey Road Studios and reveals the stories behind the creation of this masterpiece.

There has been great interest not only in the text of the book but also in its breathtaking design. David Palmer has taken Frank Herrmann's photography to another level by instilling the sprit of 1967. This appreciation had lead to the St Giles Street Gallery exhibiting not only Frank's original prints but also the wonderful David Palmer adaptations.

Shown here are some highlights from the evening - including Frank Herrmann personalising a subscriber's copy of 'Summer of Love' and Michael Ward meeting long time Genesis subscriber David McCleave.

To see more and to order your copy of Summer of Love click here. The Unseen Exhibition runs until the 1st September 2007, see details below:

LIVERPOOL FC TO GO FOR SIXTH EUROPEAN TITLE

Wednesday night sees Liverpool Football Club attempting their sixth European title as they play the final of the 2007 UEFA Champions League. Thirty years ago in 1977 saw Liverpool FC's first European victory and they must be hoping for a repeat of their 2004/2005 win against a familiar opposition, as once again they are pitted against a formidable AC Milan.

This Is Anfield is the official history of Liverpool Football Club from their ascension to the first division in 1962, under the capable management of Bill Shankly, to its fortieth anniversary in 2002. The book covers four of their five European wins and everything in between. As told through the amazing photographs of Steve Hale, the historical narrative of Andrew Thompson and astounding interviews with Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and over fifty players, past and present.

Each copy is individually signed by Ronnie Moran and at least four other LFC players. To read more and to order your copy, please click here. (Brochures are available by request or to download here).

ELVIS IS IN THE BUILDING

We are extremely happy to say that the first shipments of our most recent and highly anticipated titles are arriving from our master binders in Milan, Italy.

Elvis & The Birth Of Rock: This week saw the first deluxe copies leaving the office. These copies are bound in blue suede with sterling-silver page edging and tooling. Accompanying them are three 10" x 8" prints each signed personally by Lew Allen, the photographer whose photographs, taken 50 years ago, show Elvis at the beginning of his career. Incredibly we still have a few deluxe copies in stock - Click here to learn more and to order.

Summer Of Love: We are also delighted to announce the imminent arrival of Sir George Martin's Summer Of Love for shipment next week. These deluxe copies are fully bound in pink leather with bespoke artwork supplied by Sir Peter Blake. Subscribers should look out for the specially commissioned T-shirt accompanying this set also signed by Sir Peter. Click here to learn more.

A Big Thank You: We at Genesis would like to thank our subscribers immensely for their patience in waiting for these books. We're confident your patience will be rewarded as these books, not to mention the extras that come with them, really are very special indeed.

Keep an eye on us this year as we have some very exciting books up our sleeves along with the eagerly awaited Paul Weller career-spanning 'A Thousand Things' and Geoff MacCormack's 'From Station to Station', an incredible journey with David Bowie.
