IN MEMORIAM BRIAN ROYLANCE

The news of Brian's passing could not have been more shocking to announce but, since then, the response that has been volunteered in condolences and donations to 'Guys and St Thomas' Charity' has been a source of comfort and inspiration to all of his family and staff at Genesis. We hope that by providing a forum for everyone to share their thoughts, this comfort has been reciprocated too. Genesis subscribers held a very special place in Brian's affection and there can be no more fitting a tribute than for so many to pay their respects in such a collaborative way. For our part, we would like to thank you all for your kind and considerate messages over the past month or so. And for those of you who would like to continue to leave messages, we are leaving the forum online - please click here to do so.

His daughter and son, Catherine and Nick, have been playing an active part in the continuation of Brian's work over the past weeks, and will continue to do so. It will come as no surprise to hear how Brian was, as always, at the centre of life and creativity within Genesis, instigating work on a great number of books. Each one held its own charm for him and, though we will continue to miss him dearly, it is with a sense of respect for his faultless enthusiasm and strength of purpose that everyone at Genesis is committed to following on his path. It is with this in mind that we feel privileged to announce the publication of TOTA '75 (The Rolling Stones Tour Of The Americas 1975) and we look forward to revealing some of the other surprises Brian had in store for Genesis subscribers, in the New Year and beyond.

LIONS LAUNCH TREMENDOUS SUCCESS

Last Friday's launch of our limited edition on The History of The Lions was a triumph as rugby legends and fans met at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London to preview the book as well as celebrate the unique sports institution that is the Lions team.

It was an all-star line up with guest speakers John Dawes, Gavin Hastings, Bill Beaumont, Morné du Plessis, Michael Lynagh, Sean Fitzpatrick, Willie John McBride and commentator Ian Robertson entertaining the 1,100-strong audience. Each player spoke glowingly about The History of The Lions, which sold very well on the day and rugby enthusiasts were eager to get their sporting heroes' signatures added to their book's frontispiece.

We would like to thank MBN Promotions for organising this event and ensuring it was a huge success.

REBEL MUSIC IN Q CLASSIC

This month, Q Magazine have released a special, Classic, collector's edition dedicated to Bob Marley and the Story of Reggae. It contains some great articles charting the reggae star's rise to fame from the ghettoes of Jamaica, as well as the influence he had over the music and social politics of the mid to late Seventies. And, of course, it contains a wealth of fantastic photographs, most notably from Genesis author Kate Simon, many of which are featured in her book Rebel Music: Bob Marley and Roots Reggae.

Rebel Music contributor and former bass player with The Clash, Paul Simonon, has written the introduction to the Q Classic edition and Rebel Music is also reviewed as essential reading for reggae fans: Q describe the photographs as 'uniformly great'. For a chance to win a copy of Rebel Music, complete the crossword in the special collector's edition of Q. For more information on the book, or to place an order, click here.

DILTZ: CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' UPDATE

Not to be outdone by Brian jetting off to Hong Kong and Robby and Tessa to New Zealand, Sally has also had her fair share of globe-trotting recently - a couple of weeks ago she joined Rona Elliot in New York to conduct interviews for Henry Diltz's book, 'California Dreamin''. Sally and Rona, who is Consulting Editor for the book, met with Micky Dolenz for coffee and a chat in the Upper East Side, toast with John Sebastian in leafy Woodstock and backstage at the Strange Days Festival in Connecticut with Ray Manzarek of the Doors and John Kay of Steppenwolf. The trip was highly successful and both Rona and Sally are looking forward to working on the book in LA this Autumn.

INSIDE OUT BY NICK MASON

There are to be 2 silk-screened, fine art prints included in the Inside Out limited edition boxed set, created and signed by Nick Mason and Storm Thorgerson. On inspecting the final copies of the prints coming off the press Storm decided that the 24 colours used weren't enough. How many colours can it take to achieve perfection? 27 apparently. When finished the 2 prints, signed by Storm, ought to be worth the cost of the limited edition alone. The whole project is nearing completion and looking truly spectacular. THE LIONS UPDATE

Brian Roylance and Tessa Hodgson were recently in Hong Kong with rugby legend and previous winning Lions captain Willie John McBride. Willie John was accompanied by his lovely wife Penny and everyone was there to help promote the forthcoming Genesis/Hedley limited edition The Lions. Willie John kept invited audiences enthralled with his tales of past Lions exploits. Afterwards he signed special bookplates prepared for the copies of the book allocated for Hong Kong.

Willie and Penny have now moved on to New Zealand to continue promotion of the book. Willie and the book could be seen on Sky television before the kick-off of the second test. They are accompanied by Tessa and David Williams and Robby Elson from Genesis. Robby, as editor of The Lions, has performed a mammoth task, working all hours, in preparing the book for press. He's done a magnificent job and is now in New Zealand getting to know his wife again and no doubt taking in liquid refreshment. For the final weeks of The Lions project, Robby was ably assisted by Alex Hedley from New Zealand.

David Walmsley, author of The Lions is also in the travelling party as is Spencer Davis who is providing musical accompaniment to the merry band. The whole promotional tour is being orchestrated by David Hedley and his team. David is the co-publisher, long-time friend and Australian distributor of Genesis fine limited editions.

NEW ZEALAND LIONS PROMOTION

The promotional tour for The LIONS in New Zealand, to correspond with the current Lions tour, is now well underway. Already 2 events, organised by David Hedley and his team and attended by members of the Genesis team, have taken place.

In Dunedin,Ian Robertson the renowned commentator and journalist, entertained a crowd of around 60 local businessmen and rugby fans at the Robert Burns Hotel.

In Christchurch, on the Thursday before the 1st Test, a formal dinner with 150 attending was held at the Grand Chancellor Hotel. Again,Ian Robertson provided some of the entertainment as well as acting as MC. He was joined by Gavin Hastings, ex-Scotland and British Lions captain, who enlightened the crowd on his views of the Tour and gave his support to our book.

At both events we received great support for the book and took several advance orders.

Two further formal dinner events are to be held in Wellington and Auckland over the next couple of weeks, where the guest of honour will be the legendary Willie John McBride. Watch this space for more Tour news.

At last Genesis is delighted to announce the future publication of a stunning Elvis Presley limited edition book.

Mike McCartney and Lew Allen have been working all week at Genesis office on this exciting new project. Mike is the editor of the large format volume which features Lew Allen's superb photographs of Elvis. Remarkably, these images are previously undiscovered and the collection includes rare shots of Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers. Lew's photographs were taken in 1956 on a 5"x4" large format camera and therefore the image quality is astounding.

HEROES AND VILLAINS BOOK LAUNCH

Last night the Genesis team gathered at Hoopers Gallery in Clerkenwell to launch our latest volume, Heroes + Villians with David Steen. David spent the evening meeting customers and signing books. He gave a great talk and even played the ukelele. Colin Jones got a special mention because he was the person responsible for kicking off the project so we all owe him a big thank you. The gallery was completely packed so we were lucky the fair weather allowed us to spill outside.

We were touched that so many Genesis customers made such an effort to attend, many travelling long distances to do so. In particular, Roland Lestoquoit from Rheims and Franco Malugani and his wife who tied in a shopping trip from Milan. Lisa Lo, Mike Nellist, Alex Worral, Tom Griffiths and Dennis Blair all travelled from the north of England. We were also delighted to see those with slightly less distance to travel, such as Mark Wilesmith, Belle Atkins, Robert Diepstraten and Mike Joyce. Adrian McKay popped by earlier in the afternoon, to collect a book from Tessa, and was surprised to get the opportunity to meet and speak with David Steen in more peaceful surroundings before the masses arrived.

Nick Mason took the opportunity to see the exhibition whilst at the same time delivering his text for his forthcoming book to Brian. Gered Mankowitz, who brought along his friend Jeremy Clyde the actor, very much enjoyed bumping into old friends. Mike McCartney, Ray Cooper and Bob Harris from the world of music mingled for the evening.

Many thanks to Roger Hooper and his team at the gallery for helping make the launch such a success.

OLIVIA HARRISON TALKS TO LA TIMES

In advance of the LA launch of Concert for George at Taschen in Beverly Hills next week, Olivia Harrison talked to the Los Angeles Times about the book.

Here now, she lives for George

Widow Olivia Harrison's hands are full with the many projects started by the ex-Beatle.
By Randy Lewis
Times Staff Writer
March 9, 2005

Olivia Harrison likes to quip that were she to write a book about her 27 years with "the quiet Beatle," she'd call it "Never a Dull Moment."

George Harrison mixed his well-known passion for music and his quest for spiritual truth with utterly worldly penchants for auto racing, gardening and socializing with a zeal that seemed to run counter to the public image of a shy, inward-looking musician and family man who rarely made a splash in public after the Beatles broke up.

"People would say to him, 'You're not touring and you're not recording -- what do you do with yourself?' " says Olivia, a Southern California native who came into Harrison's life after his first marriage painfully and famously fell apart when his wife, Patti Boyd, fell in love with one of his best friends, Eric Clapton.

OLIVIA HARRISON LAUNCHES CONCERT FOR GEORGE IN AUSTRALIA

Olivia Harrison was in Sydney for a week-long promotion for the Concert for George limited edition. The campaign began on Monday 28th February with interviews for radio, television and press.

The book launch was held at the Shangri La Hotel on Friday 4th March with many Genesis customers in attendance. Those present included Richard Neville and artist Martin Sharp who, back in the Sixties, shared living quarters at the Pheasantry in the Kings Road with Eric Clapton. Rock writer and historian Glenn A. Baker introduced the evening and handed over to Brian Roylance to provide some background to the project.

Brian fondly recalled how he and George Harrison had accompanied Derek Taylor to Sydney to promote Fifty Years Adrift, remembering that George had always thought of Sydney as being 'like Liverpool with sunshine'. Brian went on to say that 'people had thought that George had owned or financed Genesis Publications but he didn't - he gave something far more precious than money, he gave his time and enthusiasm'.

Brian handed over to television presenter Melissa Doyle who conducted a question and answer session with Olivia Harrison, which had the audience spellbound.

The evening was a huge success and the general feeling amongst all who were able to view the book was that this title is one of Genesis' finest books, or the finest, to date.

The next book launch will be at the Taschen store in Beverly Hills on Tuesday 15th March. Others are in preparation for New York, Hamburg and Milan.

At the book launch Olivia presented the children's charity 'Variety' with the original signed poster that was reproduced in the Deluxe copies of the Concert for George limited edition book. The poster is being auctioned online to aid underprivileged children. Check our site for further details.

Warner Bros Records presented Olivia with a platinum disc to celebrate successful sales of The Concert For George DVD and CD.

JOHN EALES SIGNS FOR GENESIS

Australian rugby union legend, John Eales, has added his signature for Genesis forthcoming title, The Lions: The Complete History of the British and Irish Rugby Union Team. John is a true legend within the game. Playing in the second row of the scrum, he amassed 86 caps for Australia between 1991 and 2001 and is one of only five players to have won the Rugby World Cup twice - 1991 and 1999. In 2001 he captained the Wallabies against a hotly-favoured Lions team led by Martin Johnson. Despite a first Test completely dominated by the Lions, Eales led the Wallabies to a 2-1 series win.

'The Lions' is due to be published in September of this year, so as to include the forthcoming Lions tour of New Zealand. Each copy will be signed by four Lions legends as well as players representing the southern hemisphere teams who traditionally provide their opposition.

The hand-bound volume will be taken to Los Angeles on Wednesday 9th February this week so that it may be auctioned for the charity on Friday night. A reserve price of $15,000 has been set for the auction.

These photographs show our bookbinder Paul at work on this historic volume. While his labours were in progress the music of Pet Sounds could be heard coming loud and clear from the bindery.

Hand-made and signed by Eric Clapton, these are destined to become highly collectible, especially as Marley's 60th birthday is currently being celebrated.

JIM CAPALDI 1944-2005

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Jim Capaldi. Jim was a great friend of George Harrison and one of the Henley gang. Jim was best known as a member of Traffic but he also willingly participated in The Concert for George and contributed text to the book. His huge sense of fun will be greatly missed.

CONCERT FOR GEORGE UPDATE

First and foremost a Happy New Year to you all from all of us here. Our year has already become a busy one thanks to the huge success of Concert for George and the continuing sales of Rebel Music and Classic Hendrix.

If you've been kind enough to order Concert for George, we'd like to thank you for your patience in waiting for our Milan bookbinders to hand finish and despatch your copy. They're swamped with orders but are working all the hours they can to be able to start getting the books away. At the moment they're folding and sewing the sheets while Olivia Harrison is busy signing the signature pages to be bound into the books.

The first Deluxe and silk-screened cloth copies will start being despatched from Italy in the first week of February and books will flow out from then on. Thank you for your understanding in this matter and thanks for ordering the book!
