ONE OF ITALY'S LEADING QUALITY NEWSPAPERS DEVOTES FOUR PAGES TO POSTCARDS

La Repubblica, Italy's second largest selling quality paper, has just run a long feature on Postcards from the Boys. This appeared in il Venerdi, the weekend supplement, just before Christmas. The feature contained 10 cards, text and commentary as well as a packshot of the book.

The article states: 'This is a splendid volume for collectors ... it's not just a collection of routine curiosity. It also highlights how the Beatles were seeking their own identities in the four corners of the earth. From the Caribbean to France to Africa.'

'Clearly in an official publication like Postcards from the Boys, once doesn't expect the kind of revelations you'd get in an unauthorized biography. Yet combing through the book, a number of curious and interesting facts emerge.'

That revelation and many other Beatles tidbits can be found in Ringo Starr's wonderfully inventive new book, Postcards from the Boys,' writes Roger Friedman, Entertainment Editor at Foxnews.com, the web site for one of America's most popular news sources.

'If you know a Beatles fan, this is the ultimate gift ... the extravagant package ... gives a rare, intimate look into the Beatles' personal lives.'

'Ringo's descriptions of little trips and adventures are fascinating ... seeing correspondence from all of them, especially Lennon, is exciting ...'

LIVERPOOL MEDIA GO BIG ON GENESIS AWARDS

Liverpool's morning paper, the Daily Post, has just published a full page article on the Genesis Publications/Liverpool Community College Sports Photography Awards.

The Post mentioned the support for the awards from Genesis Publications and quoted former Reds star, David Fairclough, praising the quality of the entries.

He said: "It wasn't just one subjcect, but a variety. The students have really caputured the mood of the sports they covered."

The article also referred to This Is Anfield, the much-acclaimed book by Genesis Publications and world-renowned photo journalist, Steve Hale. Another pointer was our donation from the sales going to the Liverpool Football Club Former Players Association.

With a new cheque from sales due in the New Year the donations will top £10,000.

At the same time, Liverpool FC's biggest media outlet, its official web site lfc.tv, has run a two page article on the Awards, making the story its top headline on its Home Page on Friday 19th December.

The site, which gets 15 million hits a month from around the world, also quoted the Liverpool Community College lecturer, Alan McKernan, as saying: "We'd love to do the Awards again next year. They really have galvanized people into action."

KILLER QUEEN ACCLAIMED IN AMERICAN MUSIC SITE

NewBeats, one of America's strongest music sites, has hailed Killer Queen as 'this exquisitely produced photo book ... containing outtakes, test Polaroids, and other previously seen snapshots that might even surprise die-hard fans who thought they'd seen everything.'

'Rock puts his stamp on those moments perfectly and fans of Queen's early years ... will delight at his glamorous shots of the band at their most pompous.... Killer Queen captures the group at their most regal and flamboyant even when they were just starting out back in 1973.....

'Queen guitarist Brian May, Mick Rock and Mercury's long-time friend, Mary Austin, provide insightful commentary.'

'Through Mick Rock's photography, Queen's 30-year reign never looked so royal and majestic as it does in Killer Queen.'

NEW YORK TIMES FEATURES POSTCARDS

The NY Times on Sunday (7th December) ran a very colourful feature on our new Ringo title, Postcards From The Boys. It has taken us 20 years to persuade the former Beatle to do a book with us and now it is causing great interest internationally.

The NY Times piece by Lizetter Alvarez is entitled 'Dear Ringo: Having a Great Time. Wish You Were Here', and states:

'The postcards in the book are often amusing, sometimes touching and occasionally trite. But in their whimsy they offer a fresh, unfiltered look at the goings-on of the Beatles at the peak of their popularity and beyond.

The hand-written messages, and Mr Starr's textual asides ... chart the band members' evolutionÊin a way: they marry, divorce and remarry, add children to the mix, do battle, tell jokes, commiserate and egg each other on....'

KILLER QUEENS OPENS AT LONDON'S BLINK GALLERY

Mick Rock's latest exhibition of photographs, Killer Queens, is now open at London's Blink Gallery and will run until December 6. The exhibition opened with a private viewing on November 6, that saw the gallery in London's Soho packed with guests, including many of us here at Genesis. Despite being understandably busy on the opening night, Mick found time to clown around with the Genesis team, as these photos show.

Mick has collaborated with Genesis on three books so far and many of his photos of Syd Barrett, David Bowie and Queen - as featured in Psychedelic Renegades, Moonage Daydream and Killer Queen - are on display. There are also classic shots of Lou Reed, Ozzy Osbourne, Johnny Rotten, Deborah Harry, Brian Ferry, Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol and The Ramones as well as more recent stars such as the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and Kate Moss.

MICK ROCK'S "KILLER QUEENS"

Mick Rock started photographing iconic rock figures in the late 60s, shooting his friend and Pink Floyd founder member Syd Barrett (see Psychedelic Renegades). He then moved on to David Bowie during his ascent as Ziggy Stardust (see Moonage Daydream) and the stern pre-punk Lou Reed to the stellar rise of Queen and his fabulous friend Freddie Mercury (see Killer Queen). More recently he has captured on film Kate Moss and the new wave punk of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Mick Rock has always found himself to be in the right place at the right time and has resultantly taken some of the most memorable rock and roll images of the past 30 years.

This November in association with the Blink Gallery an eclectic selection of Mick's photography will be presented, including for the first time a number of previously unseen images of David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, celebrating Bowie's first major world tour in 10 years.

The show is open to the public from 7 November until 6 December.

NINE-YEAR-OLD FAN GETS LIVERPOOL GREATS TO SIGN THIS IS ANFIELD

Persistence has paid off for Mark Wilson, who has secured much-treasured signatures in his copy of This Is Anfield for his 9-year-old son, James.

Mark, a machine operator in North Wales, wrote to both Kevin Keegan and Graeme Souness to ask them to sign the book. He was 'pleasantly surprised' when Keegan invited him and James to Maine Road and signed the copy in his office.

Likewise, Graeme Souness obliged at Ewood Park when the two went there for the match against Charlton. "Graeme was a really nice fellow," says Mark. "He was very charming and said what a lovely book it is."

Then I took James to Melwood Park, LFC's training ground to try and get Michael Owen's signature. But when we didn't manage that, I took him to Owen's parents house. Owen senior took the book and got Michael to sign it and James was thrilled as he's a great fan of Michael's.

Lastly, they went to Chester where Liverpool play their reserve games and managed to get Phil Thompson and Sammy Lee to sign as they left the game against Leeds Utd. Reserves. "Phil Thompson said it was a nice book," says Mark.

Order This Is Anfield.

ORDER KILLER QUEEN NOW

The official signed limited edition celebrating one of the world's greatest rock bands is now ready and we are accepting orders. It has been produced with the cooperation of both Brian May and Roger Taylor and features stunning photographs from Mick Rock, many of which have never been seen before. The book even includes Polaroid out-takes.

Brian and Roger have both agreed to sign every edition of the book, but this is easier said than done with successful musicals opening all over the world and a constant demand for photo shoots. However, they are doing their best and have already signed most of the edition. More than ever, though, early ordering is strongly advised to ensure a copy signed by Mick, Brian and Roger. MICHAEL COOPER EXHIBITION IN LONDON

As is documented in the highly-acclaimed Genesis edition, Blinds and Shutters, Michael Cooper counted as his closest friends the leading musicians (The Beatles, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones), writers (Terry Southern, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg) and artists (Andy Warhol, Peter Blake, David Hockney) of the Sixties scene. Because Cooper was known, liked and totally accepted by the subjects of his photographs, he was in a unique position to record them all, usually with remarkable intimacy in a nonchalant style that is closer to reportage than to studio photography.

Copper's tragic suicide in 1973 marks in many ways the spiritual end of the sixties. In Keith Richards words Cooper was a '50's hipster who slipped through the 60's and couldn't stomach the 70s.' To David Bailey he was 'a man out of his time' and to his friend Christopher Gibbs 'a poet of the lens'. The photographs in this exhibition at London's Atlas Gallery form a loose almost filmic narrative of the entire decade.

  • Individual prints from £800. Prints are also sold in limited editions of 25. Please contact the gallery for prices.
  • Copies of Blinds and Shutters can be ordered at the gallery.
  • The exhibition runs from September 18th - October 24th 2003. Entry Free. Mon-Fri: 10.00am to 6.00 pm / Sat: 11.00am to 5.00pm.

MOONAGE GETS EULOGY FROM GOLDMINE

The American music magazine, Goldmine, did almost a whole page review of Moonage Daydream on 22nd August. This says: "Bowie covers almost everything one would want to know about what was going on in his head when he created Ziggy ... Though no expense was spared in making a quality book (and it's a glorious treatment), Moonage is much more than a fancy collectible."

ASTRID AT MATHEW STREET FESTIVAL

Thousands of Beatles fans congregated in Liverpool city centre last weekend for what was the biggest Mathew Street Festival ever.

Astrid and Jackie

Among the weekend's highlights was the attendance of Astrid Kirchherr, who was in Liverpool to talk about her new Genesis limited edition When We Was Fab. Beatles fans had the opportunity to meet Astrid at the Mathew Street Gallery and at the Beatles Convention which took place at the Adelphi. Among the guests was Jackie Lomax, who was delighted to see a photograph of himself in Astrid's book.

Naturally Astrid was pleased to meet up again with Jackie who now lives in Ventura County, California. Astrid and Jackie had dinner with Genesis representatives on Sunday night along with two of the actors from Backbeat, Scot Williams and Chris O'Neill, who played Paul and George.

Leading Liverpool papers devoted pages to Astrid and When We Was Fab. The Liverpool Echo, Liverpool's famous evening paper ran a double page spread on Astrid the day after interviewing her at the city's Beatles Festival last weekend. In the article of Monday 25th August, Peter Grant called the book 'a limited edition masterpiece'

On the same day The Daily Post devoted the lion's share of Philip Key's Arts Diary to Astrid and the book.

GENESIS BOOKS IN MEDIA

The Guardian, in a double review of our two Stones books, Pleased To Meet You and Wood on Canvas, wrote in the Guide on Saturday 28th June 2003:

"These are expensive but beautifully produced limited edition books opulently packaged."

"Pleased to Meet You captures an aura of druggy, dissolute menace backstage."

"In Wood on Canvas - Every Picture Tells a Story Ronnie Wood reminisces about his time in the Stones, Jeff Beck Group and The Faces, dolled up with paintings of the stars he's met along the way (Muddy Waters, Elvis and ex-flatmate Jimi Hendrix)."

"At £234 each these books are almost as decadent as the band's legendary excesses."

Also the July issue of the Reader's Digest has devoted two pages to George Martin on George Harrison and their deep friendship. This is the first time that the Digest has featured a Genesis book - Playback - and a welcome newcomer with its 49 language editions and 86 million readers world-wide.

PSYCHEDELIC RENEGADES: MICK ROCK PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Zoltar the Magnificent of Marshal Street, London is presenting the first ever exhibition of photographer Mick Rock's portraits of Syd Barrett, the enigmatic founder of Pink Floyd.

Rock provided the inimitable images for the cover of 'Raw Power' by The Stooges, Lou Reed's 'Transformer' and Queen's 'Queen II' album cover which was later copied in the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' video; his back catalogue is the indispensable photographic history of pop culture, brilliantly capturing countless portraits of 20th century iconoclasts and Rock and Roll performers. His recently published (by Genesis Publications) collaboration with David Bowie, Moonage Daydream marries 15,000 of Bowies' words with 659 of Rock's iconic Ziggy Stardust photographs.

The photographs of Syd Barrett taken between 1969 and 1972 capture the man after his departure from Pink Floyd and embody the spirit of London long past but not forgotten. Syd Barrett's history has often been viewed as tragic but as these previously unseen pictures document, Barrett was his own man with his own inimitable style, vision and unique creative perspective. Syd Barrett and friend, the photographer Mick Rock, were doubtless ahead of their times and beyond their years. These photographs can also be seen in the Genesis published Psychedelic Renegades.

This Summer Mick travels to Japan for a major retrospective of his work showing at the Tokyo Museum of modern Photography which will go on to tour Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong. He then returns to the UK for a series of academic lectures including a forthcoming exhibition of his material at the Institute for Contemporary Arts in London.

Exhibition opens on June 6th everyday from 10am to 6pm. Closed on Sundays.

WHEN WE WAS FAB GOES INTO PRODUCTION

Astrid has made her image selection and printed all the photographs for the book. Next week work will begin on the layouts.

This is the reason why Astrid has chosen to make When We Was Fab, her last book:

'There have been so many books in the world that have printed my photographs, with or without my permission. My pictures have been published in all sorts of ways for all sorts of reasons: naturally because they're interesting to Beatle fans, some of whom wouldn't mind if a picture is out of focus as long as a Beatle is in it; or with the wrong crop so that George is cut out of the picture because they wanted only John; or simply because one of them was in the news and so a picture of mine would appear.

So I decided it was time to do one book in which I am totally involved so that it contains the pictures I like most, printed the way I would print them, even down to the text and design, with of course the help of Genesis, Brian and Ulf. The book is for people who are interested in photography in the Sixties and in the way I saw my friends and depicted them in the best way that I could.

Therefore, this book is me and that is why it will be the last one. The very last one.'

We plan to launch the book in Berlin in mid-July.

CAPTAIN COOK SPEAR SELLS FOR £150,000

A native wooden spear which killed Captain James Cook in February 1779 sold at auction for £150,000 yesterday (March 26th). Seventeen bidders from as far afield as Hawaii, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Britain vied for the relic.

The huge interest in the spear pushed up the sale price at Lyon and Turnbull auctioneers in Edinburgh from an original estimate of £2,000 to £19,000 before bidding even started. After fierce competition by telephone between collectors in America and Britain, it was eventually sold to an anonymous London buyer who said that he wanted to keep an item of such historical importance in the country. He paid a total of £156,000, including commission.

Genesis Publications has published several editions dedicated to James Cook's and other explorers' Voyages of Discovery. These volumes are illustrated facsimiles of the original ships' logs and journals, and include 'James Cook's Journal of HMS Resolution 1772-75', when Cook lost his life at the age of 50 as he anchored off Hawaii to conduct repairs to his ship. After numerous petty thefts from his ship, Cook went ashore intending to take a local dignitary hostage until the stolen items were returned. But he was met by a crowd of more than 1,000 natives on the beach at Kealakekua Bay, who clubbed him to the ground in the ensuing uproar and repeatedly stabbed him with spears. His remains were later buried at sea.

After being recovered from the beach by Cook's navigation officer Captain Bligh - later of the famously mutinous Bounty, also recorded by Genesis in 'The Mutinous Seizure of the Bounty' - the spear was fashioned into a 91 inch gold-topped walking stick in the 1800s and inscribed and given as a gift to Admiral Sir David Milne by Admiral Charles Ross.

Cook was on his third voyage to the southern hemisphere when he died. On earlier trips he had skippered the Endeavour, described in 'The Journal of Joseph Banks in the Endeavour'.

The spear remained with the descendents of Admiral Milne until they decided to sell it.

Voyages 25 March 2003

NEW ON SITE: VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY

Genesis Publications has long been associated with limited editions on rock and roll. However, the company, founded in 1974, originally published leather-bound historical volumes with forewords written by the late Lord Mountbatten, Prince Charles and The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. These volumes included illustrated facsimiles of ships' logs and journals relating to daring voyages of discovery such as 'The Journal of a Voyage in HMS Beagle' by Charles Darwin and 'James Cook's Journal of HMS Resolution'. Indeed, it was these volumes which impressed George Harrison enough to encourage him to create 'I Me Mine' for publication by Genesis. We have now added pages on our website dedicated to these historical editions, which incidentally make wonderful gifts.

A new index has been added to our Books section which clearly lists all these 'Voyages of Discovery' editions. Also in the index are two further old editions, facsimiles of the original manuscripts for Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures Underground' and Charles Dickens's 'The Cricket on the Hearth'. A few copies of all these beautiful fine bindings are still available and order forms are linked to every book's page. We hope you enjoy browsing all these titles.

WORTHINGTON CUP WINNERS

Andy Thompson, the author of This Is Anfield, has given us his exclusive report of Liverpool's Worthington Cup victory on March 1st, 2003:

Liverpool thoroughly deserved their latest triumph. They were first in every tackle, first to every loose ball and first on to the podium to collect a cup which, in itself, may not be as important as other prizes, but in context signifies a very welcome return to the kind of form which has given Liverpool supporters so much renewed pride in their team since Gérard Houllier took charge in 1998. It was a very public vindication of the manager, and a very big poke in the eye for those whose idea of supporting a team is to take to the airwaves and whinge. This should shut them up for a while. And wasn't Fergie's face a picture?

BOB MARLEY: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JUNIOR MARVIN

Junior Marvin

We are very grateful to both Wayne Jobson and Junior Marvin, not only for taking part in the production of Kate Simon's wonderful new book on Bob Marley, but also for giving us some insight into the reggae legend in the PicureHouse.

Junior Marvin was lead guitarist with The Wailers for some 20 years, and appears on numerous Bob Marley and The Wailers albums, inlcuding Exodus, Kaya, Babylon by Bus, and Uprising. After Bob's untimely death, The Wailers remained together with Junior on lead vocals, until 1997. He has also played with and alongside a great many other names at the forefront of contemporary music history, inluding Toots And The Maytals, Burning Spear, Stevie Winwood and Eric Clapton.

Singer and musician, Wayne Jobson, whose own band Native supported Bob in Jamaica, has also recorded with a host of names familiar to Genesis's readers, including Jimmy Cliff, Keith Richards, Willie Nelson, Chrissy Hynde, and Garth Brooks. Among other things, Wayne is also an attorney and a record producer, but nowadays, both Wayne and Junior can be found at the helm of America's first nationwide reggae station, on XM Satellite Radio.

Our thanks to both Wayne and Junior for sharing some memories of Bob with us.

WHEN WE WAS FAB UPDATE

The first printing trials for When We Was Fab have just been completed in Milan. Experiments have been made with three printing techniques and the results are being sent to Astrid Kirchherr in Hamburg for her examination and approval.

Olivia Harrison has kindly agreed to write the Foreword to this lasting tribute to The Beatles and their Hamburg contemporaries.

In her Introduction, Astrid talks about The Beatles being the subjects of her first portraits:

'I tried to capture, not only beautiful faces, but also the look behind those faces - their experiences, what they had been through. When I took most of the pictures, The Beatles weren't famous at all. They were just young boys with great talent, wonderful humour and intelligence. What amazed me was that, behind all the outfits and rock and roll behaviour, they were very sensible, sensitive young men who urged for something new in life, which was exactly what I did then, in the '60s.'

Hendrix 17 February 2003

CLASSIC HENDRIX

Genesis is proud to be working on the ultimate tribute to Jimi Hendrix. For the last two years Ross Halfin (aided by Sally Crick) has been diligently carrying out picture research to produce a most unusual and comprehensive finely produced edition on Jimi Hendrix. To this end, he has already made several trips to America and this month visits Tokyo and Paris to search archives and complete publishing deals for rare and previously unseen photographs of Hendrix. An informed text is being prepared by Brad Tolinski in New York.

In his foreword to this large format book, Ross Halfin states, 'The point I'm trying to make is that everybody loves Jimi Hendrix. The book shows him from every perspective. There was no-one like him, or who will ever replace him. He was embraced by black and white audiences alike, something which his jazz peers such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane never achieved.'

This limited edition will be of major interest to Hendrix fans all over the world and to anyone interested in music culture.

Classic Hendrix should be ready for Christmas. The first 350 copies will be Deluxe copies and it is anticipated that these will be reserved very quickly indeed.

Order Classic Hendrix.

ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE GIVES MAXIMUM WHO FIVE STARS

SEE THEM, FEEL THEM

The Who's history comes to glorious life through the hilarious recollections and stunning photography of Maximum Who.

Maximum Who *****
Compiled by Ross Halfin

When The Who hit rock & roll like a gale force back in the day, it would have been impossible to imagine the band as the subject of a posh coffee-table book. Maximum Who: The Who in the Sixties strikes a perfect balance between its lavish illustrations and hilarious recollections by Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and the late John Entwistle. Shots of the band relaxing at home, fighting off boredom backstage and clothes shopping in swinging London convey compelling - and poignant - insights into both the band and the era.

Even a casual flip through tells the story of the Who's tumultuous rise from bashing around London clubs to international stardom with the release of Tommy in 1969. Daltrey's wry response to some pictures of the band fooling around - "My God, we're having a laugh!" speaks volumes about the tensions that nearly split up the group dozens of times. The live shots burst off the page.

Nor does the music itself get short shrift. "I wasn't influenced by any other bass players", Entwistle says. "It was Duane Eddy and his low, twangy sound." And Townshend offers this about the band's work on Tommy: "[Producer] Kit [Lambert] seemed to feel the need to let the group feel they were really involved in the creative process. They weren't."

Maximum Who is like a family album. Everyone who looks at it has a different memory, and old resentments flare up. But a deep, abiding affection underlies everything, and everyone who isn't dead still shows up to make his story heard.

Anthony Decurtis, Rolling Stone Magazine, October 2002
