NEW EXILE REVIEWS in Entertainment Weekly, Independent on Sunday and Mojo.

Exile continues to receive glowing reviews in the world's press. Giving the book a top-scoring 'A' rating, the massive-circulation US magazine Entertainment Weekly (30 November) wrote: 'Granted, this limited edition photo book costs more than two front-row tickets to the next inevitable Rolling Stones reunion tour. But it's hard to imagine a niftier collectible for die-hard fans. Tarlé's intimate shots - taken during the Stones' 1971 stay in the south of France to record Exile on Main St. - capture Keith, Mick, and various hangers-on in the studio and in repose; coupled with an insightful text, it's a rare glimpse at the creative process.'

Alongside a picture from the book of Keith seated on a wicker chair, Britain's Independent On Sunday (9 December) described Exile as: 'A deluxe present for the die-hard Stones fan... a luxurious volume of rare photos and in-depth interviews detailing the decadent life at the Villa Nellcôte in the south of France, with Keith Richards, Anita Pallenberg and vast numbers of hangers-on.'

Meanwhile Britain's leading music monthly magazine Mojo ran a 14-page feature on Exile in their January 2002 issue. Titled 'The Aristocats', the article described Exile as 'the ultimate Stones photo book... exquisitely-crafted ... probably the most intimate document of a band at work and play ever published.'

More reviews of 'sumptuous' Exile

Last week the Financial Times described Exile as 'sumptuous'.

More reviews and comments in the press this week:

'A sumptuous memoir of that summer' - The Observer, 2 December 2001.

'A wonderful, sumptuous book' - Libby Purves, on Midweek (BBC Radio 4), 28 November.

'An absolutely beautiful book' - Ed Victor, leading literary agent, on Midweek (BBC Radio 4), 28 November.

'A magnificent book' - Johnnie Walker (BBC Radio 2), 27 November.

'On 250 large-format, beautifully laid out and expensively printed pages the atmosphere is captured in which the sessions for the most explosive and feverish of all albums took place... A pleasure.' Rolling Stone (Germany), December 2001.

'The story might never have been fully chronicled but for Dominique Tarlé, a young freelance photographer who had attached himself to the band before their emigration and was accepted as one of their inner circle. Between 1971 and '72, Tarlé spent several months living with Richards, snapping him and the other Stones and their women and followers. Penniless and obscure, Tarlé did not sell any of his exclusive shots at the time. Only now are they seeing the light in a book, Exile. They give a fascinating insight into how healthy and almost wholesome the Dracula of rock learnt to be.' - Sunday Times Magazine, 2 December 2001.

There was also a 6-page interview feature in Kultur Spiegel, the monthly supplement to Germany's leading magazine Der Spiegel, which you can read online - in German, of course.

We are further expecting the book to be reviewed in the Independent on Sunday, on 9 December, and in Time Out magazine (London edition) on 5 December, and a major feature in the January issue of Mojo magazine is due to hit the streets next week.

Watch out for Exile in the media this week

Exile will be officially launched in the UK this week. There will be a major 8-page photo feature on Exile in the Sunday Times Magazine on 2 December. A text-only version should be available from the Sunday Times website.

Anita Pallenberg, who contributed text and appears in many photographs in the book, is appearing on BBC Radio's Johnnie Walker show (Radio 2, 27 Nov, 18.30 GMT) and Midweek (Radio 4, 28 Nov, 09.00). For anyone who misses these shows or is outside the UK, both will be accessible online from the BBC website (click on these links: Johnnie Walker, Midweek.

'Sumptuous' Exile in the FT

Exile was listed in the Financial Times' review of Christmas Books on 24 November. Below a photograph from the book (Mick watching Keith play guitar at the Nellcote dining table) was the following text: 'Stones strictly limited: above, Jagger and Richards making music in the South of France, 1971. That year, a tax bill of staggering size propelled the band members, with their families and entourage, to move to France, where they made the 'Exile on Main St' album. Photographer Dominique Tarlé recorded their lives and work, girls and meals, houses, friends and families in 'Exile', a sumptuous limited edition of 2,000 copies.'

Exile in Vogue

Vogue.com, the online version of Vogue magazine, ran a news item on Exile on 2nd November, focusing on Anita Pallenberg's contribution to the book. Vogue's verdict was that Exile 'documents one blissful six-month stint in the South of France with the Rolling Stones,' and that it 'is bound to become a coffee table essential for the rich and fabulous.' You can read the news item here.

Exile in Italy

On 19 October Italy's national newspaper La Repubblica ran a 6-page photo feature on Exile in their weekly colour magazine supplement Il venerdi di Repubblica. Here's an excerpt from the accompanying article (translation thanks to Paul Nathanson):

'Exactly 30 years after the Stones' stay at the villa Nellcôte a book of photos is being published - symbolically called Exile - which narrates this episode with exceptional beauty, snatched poses, fleeting moments. It is an accurate, elegant X-ray into the deep heart of the legend.'

Liverpool 5, Germany 1

England's awesome defeat of Germany in a World Cup qualifying match in Munich on 1st September underlines the revival of Liverpool FC: all five goals in the 5-1 win were scored by players from the club. Following on from Liverpool's treble-winning season, Liverpool are hot property again. 'The Sunday newspapers have been filled with adverts for Liverpool souvenir plates' wrote The Guardian on 3rd September.

Far better value than mass-produced memorabilia will be provided by This Is Anfield, our forthcoming limited edition history of the club, produced by craftsmen to the highest standards as with all Genesis books. We're pleased to announce that it will be published in association with the Liverpool FC Former Players Association. Every copy of the edition will be signed by Ronnie Moran and at least one other former player. You can join the mailing list here.

The book will be bound in quarter blue leather with gold and silver tooling; the front and back boards are printed and foil-blocked; the page edges are silver.

The book is due for publication next year in time for the 30th anniversary of the Ziggy Stardust LP's original release on 6th June 2002. For further details and pictures, please visit our preview page, where you can also sign up on the book's advance mailing list. If you supply your full street address when you sign up, we shall send you a copy of the 4-page advance brochure, which is now available. Winner of second Exile Competition announced

Our second Exile competition has now closed. We asked the following question: 'Trevor Churchill "found" piles of tapes in the Stones' Bermondsey warehouse, took them to Olympic Studios, catalogued them and took some of them down to the Villa Nellcôte for the Stones to hear. Which Stones version of a Jimi Hendrix song is featured on those tapes?"

The correct answer was 'Red House' and congratulations are due to the winner, drawn at random today from those who submitted correct entries by the 1st August deadline: Dr Johannes Delmere, who will receive a free copy of our Ronnie Wood limited edition Wood On Canvas. We will have another competition on the site soon.

MANIA DAYS: extract from a book review

Andy Davis's review of Mania Days published in Record Collector magazine issue no. 264 (August 2001) has left us pleased as punch. Copies of Mania Days, which features Curt Gunther's photographs of The Beatles on their first big tour of North America in the late summer of 1964, are available here now. Here's a lengthy extract:

'Unobtrusive in style in the manner of all great reportage, Gunther's images are at once at home with their subject while maintaining their professional distance. They do the job; they recount the as-it-happened unfolding of that unparalleled tour, and they get behind the scenes, into the limousine, onto the holiday ranch. They look out the same windows through which the Beatles looked. They see the motorcycle cops with guns in their holsters, they see the multi-racial swell of Beatlemaniacs, they see a completely new world order spreading out before them.

'Gunther's photographs capture this grandeur, this sense of importance. They record the majestic gestures alongside the mundane, again and again. They are both intimate and keenly observed, glimpsed through the eye of an older generation who'd been there, done that, but never seen anything quite like this.

'As expected from Genesis, the production values of Mania Days push the envelope marked "the winner is" beyond everyone else's standards. Heavyweight art paper is printed with blacks from which no light escapes, through to a brilliance that's whiter than white. Well, as superior a white as you'll see anywhere; in technical terms, Gunther's exposures, and Genesis's reproduction of them, are perfect.

'In an inspired stroke that further elevates this beautiful book, many of Gunther's images have been double-exposed and presented as sepia-toned Beatles montages. As with the endpapers, pictures that might otherwise have been overlooked merge to form dreamlike spreads that are every bit as open and impressionistic as the vignettes Derek Taylor used to write; snatches of life preserved as art.

'Limited to 2500 copies, Mania Days is a gift of a Beatles book. Its contents are as gilt-edged as its gold-leafed pages. Large-format, quarter-bound in leather and housed in a silk-screened slip-case, it's something to treat yourself to and to treasure.'

AN UPDATE: GOOD NEWS FOR MONTSERRAT

The auctioning of the 'Yesterday for Montserrat' limited edition prints signed by Sir George Martin and Sir Paul McCartney has started wonderfully well. The winning bid for copy number 1, the most prestigious print of the edition of 500, was over US$30,000 (not, as previously reported here, $70,010, which was apparently an invalid or hoax bid). Further copies are being made available for bidding in batches over the next few weeks. All profits are going towards building a cultural centre for the victims of the Montserrat volcano disaster, to help them rebuild their lives.

[top of page]

14 June 2001

Yesterday for Montserrat

Today, 36 years after the original recording at Abbey Road Studios of The Beatles' 'Yesterday', which became the most-recorded song in history, Sir George Martin and Sir Paul McCartney are launching a charity auction of 500 signed lithographs of George Martin's original 1965 score.

The aim of the auction, organised by Yahoo!, is to raise much needed funds for The Sir George Martin Music Foundation to aid the Caribbean island of Montserrat, devastated in June 1997 when the Soufriere Hills Volcano erupted, killing 19 people. All proceeds will go towards the planned building of a new cultural and community centre to help the re-generation of the island.

George Martin's connection to the island dates back to the late 1970s when he built AIR Studios Montserrat which for nearly 11 years was one of the most prolific studios in the world. Montserrat suffered greatly from Hurricane Hugo in 1989, then from a series of volcanic eruptions starting in 1995 which destroyed much of the island.

The first lithograph (copy number one) and a portion of the limited edition are being exclusively auctioned by Yahoo!, starting today. All even numbered prints will be auctioned via Yahoo! US and all odd numbers via Yahoo! UK.

Paul McCartney and George Martin have personally signed all 500 of the framed, double-sided lithographs along the bottom of the main page. Each copy is a faithful reproduction of the original, and is presented in a double sided frame of burr ash and walnut, 725 x 605 x 25 mm, specially designed by David Linley, the noted craftsman and nephew to HM Queen Elizabeth II. Speaking on BBC TV's Breakfast programme this morning, Sir George undertook to deliver copy number one of the edition to the winning bidder personally - even if the destination is in Outer Mongolia.

EXILE COMPETITION WINNERS

There's been a minor cock-up. We're sorry. We were first advised that The Who's LIVE AT LEEDS was recorded on the Rolling Stones' mobile studio. After posting the competition we were advised that this album was recorded using the Pye unit. Therefore there are two winning answers to our competition instead of one. These are:
The Rolling Stones - 'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out'
The Who - 'Live At Leeds'
To try and even things up we've drawn two winners - one from each of the above batch of anwers. And the two winners who each receive a copy of our limited edition, PLEASED TO MEET YOU are:
    Alan Shaw and John Walker
Thank you all for taking part and don't forget our new Exile competition (below).

THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY, MANIA DAYS AND A TIME TO LIVE

I am afraid that I have some disappointing news. There is not going to be a limited edition of The Beatles Anthology book after all. Any decision by The Beatles has to be unanimous to proceed and although there was a majority vote for the limited edition this was not sufficient.

Naturally, we are as disappointed as no doubt you are, particularly as Genesis spent so many years creating the book for the mass market. On a positive note, the bookshop hardback edition did receive worldwide acclaim, and was probably the nearest thing you could get to a Genesis style production in mass market form: and maybe it was felt it couldn't be bettered?

The good news is that we do have a sensational Beatles limited edition newly available. MANIA DAYS features the remarkable photographs of Curt Gunther. If you like the US Tour photographs on pages 146-154 of the Anthology you'll love Mania Days which is packed from cover to cover with sensational on-the-road pictures by Curt. Mania Days is exquisitely designed by Nicky Page who designed most of the layouts for The Beatles Anthology and other Genesis titles. So side by side on your bookshelf the Anthology and Mania Days will make a fine pair. After all, they have a lot in common. Please note that out of 200 Deluxe copies, only 25 copies remain. Don't forget that instalment plans, with no interest charges, are always available.

And now A TIME TO LIVE is in the final stages of production. To all those who have already ordered we would like to say a big 'thank you' for all your patience. And to those who haven't, remember this could be your last chance to have your name included in the book. This is an opportunity that won't happen again.

All over the world our subscribers wait uncomplainingly for their books to be made by our craftsmen then frequently send such wonderful communications of support. We truly appreciate this and know that we wouldn't be able to do our work without you. So we've all played our part, each and every one of us, in making The Beatles Anthology possible, and enjoyed throughout the world. Now it's time to move on.

And we've got some fantastic other projects to look forward to. Not only Mania Days and A Time To Live, but also Exile, We Will Rock You, and others - including the wonderful collaboration with David Bowie on Ziggy Stardust just announced.

Please note also that it is possible to join a Waiting List on this website for any of our limited edition titles that has completely sold out (should the odd copy become available) or is not yet listed on this site. Simply complete the form on that page about your requested title and submit it to us. We shall then let you know if a copy becomes available at a future date.

With very good wishes,
Brian Roylance

WE WILL ROCK YOU

Photographs by Mick Rock, Foreword by Brian May.

We are pleased to announce that we are working on our first limited edition book on Queen. We Will Rock You features the photographs of legendary lensman Mick Rock, and will be released later this year.

Mick Rock was requested to shoot the first major publicity shots of Queen, on the back of his immortal shots of David Bowie (in his Ziggy Stardust persona), Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. Shortly after, Mick was commissioned to photograph and art-direct the immortal Queen II album sleeve, as well as the subsequent Sheer Heart Attack album. Mick also captured the band in many early live shows as well as in the recording studio and on other key occasions.

We Will Rock You also includes numerous recollections by Mick alongside his classic photographs. Produced in collaboration with Queen's surviving band members and management, We Will Rock You will provide the most comprehensive portrait of one of the world's greatest bands at this pivotal time in their career.

The likely binding will be in leather and satin, and there will probably be a choice of colours. Each copy is autographed by Mick Rock. The special pre-publication price will be in the region of GBP150-225. Deluxe copies will also be available at a higher price. To register your interest please email queen@genesis-publications.com.

Pete Townshend on The Who Live

Pete Townshend referred to the Genesis book/CD set The Who Live between songs on stage at Birmingham NEC on 8 November 2000: "I was just looking at this guy Ross Halfin that's pissing around down the front taking pictures. He just put a really great book of live Who pictures together... In the book you get a sense of the fact that in the great days of the Sixties and Seventies what used to happen was that we were discovering what used to happen at rock concerts, and it was a little bit more than we expected. Don't know whether it happens today. We like to think it does, especially at our shows. You get a bargain. Nothing to do with us. The bargain is what you bring and the bargain is ours..." - before launching straight into - what else? - the song 'Bargain'. With only about 30 copies remaining, this is pretty much your last chance to get hold of one before this limited edition is totally sold out.

Beatles Anthology wins award

The Beatles Anthology book (see archive), which was compiled, edited and prepared for press by Genesis Publications, was awarded the BCA Illustrated Book of the Year at the British Book Awards in London on 22 February. The awards, popularly known as the 'Nibbies', have been running since 1990 and express the book trade's own preferences of books published in the past year. Meanwhile The Beatles' hits compilation album 1 set a new world record when it hit the top of the charts in 34 countries around the world (see BBC for details). By 21 December 2000 it was apparently selling six copies per second worldwide.

Jack Vettriano

Our newest book is a special 250-copy limited edition of Lovers and Other Strangers, the beautiful new volume of Jack Vettriano's paintings which was recently published in the book trade.

Jack Vettriano has rapidly established a name for himself as Scotland's leading contemporary artist, and the stylish nostalgia and charged romance of his paintings may make this volume ideal for your Valentine's Day gift.

These special copies of Lovers and Other Strangers: The Limited Edition have been prepared in collaboration with the artist himself. Each copy is signed by Jack Vettriano and individually numbered.

There's a wonderful hand-binding in half leather, and an extremely elegant and finely-produced slipcase, which has a Vettriano self-portrait silk-screened in two colours onto the cover. To read more about the book, view some of the images and order your own copy online please go the preview page.

The first fifty copies of the edition were sold even before they arrived from our bookbinders in December, but we expect to receive a further batch of fifty hand-bound copies a week before Valentine's Day. To avoid disappointment, please don't delay your order. If you would like to request a particular copy number, enquire delivery or have any other query, please email Tessa at Genesis Publications.

George Alcock

We are sad to announce the death of George Alcock MBE, who passed away on 15 December 2000. George was Britain's greatest amateur astronomer, who discovered a record five comets and five novae from the British Isles, and there have been many warm tributes to this remarkable and much-liked man.

David Whitehouse on BBC News Online wrote: "The finder of five comets and five exploding stars, he has been described as the greatest visual astronomer who ever lived under cloudy UK skies." Professor Brian Marsden, from the International Astronomical Union (IAU), commented that George Alcock had made a unique contribution to astronomy. Martin Mobberley of the British Astronomical Association described him as "a truly inspirational figure, probably our finest observer ever - irreplaceable".

A memorial service is being held in honour of George Alcock at Peterborough Cathedral, England, at 12 noon on Saturday 17th February.

We were privileged to publish Kay Williams's acclaimed biography of George, Under an English Heaven, four years back. Some readers may recall George and Kay attending a most enjoyable book launch at the 1996 London Astronomy Show. Kay's own obituary of George appeared in The Guardian on 26th January.

For anyone interested in George Alcock's life or astronomy in general, this wonderful biography is required reading. We take the liberty of reminding readers that you can read more about it here on this website and order online.
