BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS TOUR STARTS TOMORROW
Thirty-five years after the incredible 1974 tour, The Lions return to South Africa tomorrow (30th May) to start their latest campaign. The ’74 tour was famous for many reasons; Willie John McBridge’s captaincy ensured a complete set of ‘zeros’ in the loss column and the legendary ’99 call’ meant the tourists gave as good as they got against the notoriously ‘robust’ South Africans.
‘I said I would give a call: '999' for emergencies. Of course, that was too long and by the time I got to the second nine, everyone was getting stuck in, so '99' it became.’ Willie John McBride, 1974 Lions captain
For the complete history of the Lions from its inception in 1888 to the most recent 2005 tour, our signed limited edition is an indispensable history for all rugby fans. Signed by Willie John along with John Dawes, Brian Lochore, Morné du Plessis, John Eales, Bill Beaumont and Gavin Hastings it is the only complete history of The Lions ever to be published – and even includes ‘forgotten’ tours to South America. STORM LAUNCH AT LIBERTY IN LONDON
We would like to thank all those who attended the launch of Storm Thorgerson’s 40th anniversary box set, ‘Taken By Storm’. Featuring a signed first edition copy of his book of the same name, each set comprises 4 signed and numbered fine art prints and a drawer full of other curiosities.
to read more about this limited set.
The location at Liberty’s was suitably grand, with Storm’s artwork adorning every wall and samples of the boxed set interspersed between his original props – including the double silvered balls used for ‘Interstellar’ an exhibition of Pink Floyd, in Paris, 2003.
Storm Thorgerson describes this work in his book: ‘The area between the spheres is reminiscent of
Ummagumma
though much more difficult to define, easier to see the depths of reflection, showing the trees, clouds, river, grass, and my good self and crazy Rupert if you look hard. I find this piece very tranquil and calm… the calm before the storm, would that be?’
In attendance on the night were many Genesis subscribers, friends and fans; including Geoff MacCormack who came to show his support along with award-winning jazz photographer David Redfern and music journalist Dave Brolan.
Storm personalises special plates for subscribers that couldn't make the event.

BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS SELECTED FOR SOUTH AFRICA TOUR
The 37-man squad of the British and Irish Lions rugby team was announced today, April 21. In what will be seen as a surprise in some quarters, Ireland’s Paul O’Connell has been handed the captaincy over his countryman, and Ireland’s Grand-Slam winning captain, Brian O’Driscoll. O’Driscoll – who captained the Lions in 2005 – fared better than the other home nations captains in that he at least made the squad; England’s Steve Borthwick, Wales’ Ryan Jones and Scotland’s Mike Blair are not among the final selection.
The Lion’s last tour to South Africa was in 1997 when Martin Johnson led the tourists to a 2-1 series victory. That side, as is this latest, was coached by Ian McGeechan who was also a part of the most successful Lions team in history. In 1974, under captain Willie John McBride, the Lions travelled to South Africa and became the first touring rugby side ever to go unbeaten – playing 22 games and winning three Tests and drawing a fourth. McGeechan will be hoping for a similar result 35 years on, but perhaps without the level of ferocity and violence that beset that legendary tour.
Brian O’Driscoll, Martin Johnson and Willie John McBride are all contributors to Genesis’ signed limited edition – The Lions: The Complete History of the British and Irish Rugby Union Team. Written by David Walmsley and featuring original text by 27 Lions and opposition captains and hundreds of photographs and items of memorabilia sourced from museums and collections around the world, The Lions is the most complete history of the world’s most famous rugby team that’s ever been produced. It covers every tour from 1888 up to and including the 2005 tour to New Zealand, as well as previously ‘lost’ tours to Argentina between 1910 and 1936, and games with the likes of Brazil and Ceylon.
For more information,
The full squad of the 2009 British and Irish Lions is as follows: Lee Byrne (Wales), Rob Kearney (Ireland), Shane Williams (Wales), Leigh Halfpenny (Wales), Ugo Monye (England), Luke Fitzgerald (Ireland), Tommy Bowe (Ireland),Tom Shanklin (Wales), Jamie Roberts (Wales), Brian O'Driscoll (Ireland), Keith Earls (Ireland), Riki Flutey (England), Ronan O'Gara (Ireland), Stephen Jones (Wales), Mike Phillips (Wales), Harry Ellis (England), Tomas O'Leary (Ireland), Gethin Jenkins (Wales), Adam Jones (Wales), Andrew Sheridan (England), Phil Vickery (England), Euan Murray (Scotland), Jerry Flannery (Ireland), Lee Mears (England), Matthew Rees (Wales), Paul O'Connell, capt (Ireland), Alun Wyn Jones (Wales), Donncha O'Callaghan (Ireland), Nathan Hines (Scotland), Simon Shaw (England), David Wallace (Ireland), Stephen Ferris (Ireland), Alan Quinlan (Ireland), Joe Worsley (England), Martyn Williams (Wales), Jamie Heaslip (Ireland), Andy Powell (Wales)
'If you could dislocate this one Tans...' Brian O'Driscoll and Tana Umaga before the 2005 Test series begins.

NEW BOB DYLAN ALBUM DUE THIS APRIL
A new ‘surprise’ album from Bob Dylan is on its way according to Rolling stone magazine. The disc purportedly contains ten new tracks and follows the same live-studio feel of
Modern Times. Dylan is said to have been inspired after writing for the Edith Piaf biopic,
La Vie en Rose, in 2007. It follows on from his Album of the Year 2008,
Tell Tale Signs.
Bob Dylan’s place in the history of modern music is assured and no better recorded than in the Genesis titles he has inspired; from
Early Dylan
by Barry Feinstein to
Dylan In Woodstock
by Elliott Landy and the award-winning
Thin Wild Mercury
by Jerry Schatzberg. Each is hand-signed, features previously unpublished photographs and text and is one of a limited edition.

Main image from
Dylan In Woodstock:
“My pictures are the only ones that capture this period of love in his life. His art continued but his career took second place to his home life. People in those days looked up to him as a leader because of the profound wisdom in his songs. As far as I am concerned, there was also great wisdom in the way he was living his personal life.”

YES INDEED! THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF JOE ADAMS
Celebrating 60 years since the release of Ray Charles' first ever single release – 'Confession Blues' in April, 1949 – Genesis Publications is proud to announce the forthcoming limited edition book and DVD set, YES INDEED! The Photographs of Joe Adams, published in association with the charitable Ray Charles Robinson Foundation.
BILL WYMAN: ‘Ray Charles is, for me, the greatest music icon of the 20th century.’
Introduced by Bill Wyman, this new volume dedicated to the life of the Genius features an incredible collection of contributors with Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Quincy Jones, Tom Waits and many more coming together to tell Ray's life story, alongside the vibrant photography of Joe Adams.
In 2006 staff at Ray Charles Enterprises uncovered Joe's priceless collection of photographs. Genesis Publications and the Ray Charles Marketing Group have worked together ever since and are proud to present, for the first time ever, the rare and never before seen photographs taken by Ray's long-time manager, business partner and friend, Mr Joe Adams.
JOE ADAMS: ‘Ray said he was a lovable Libra and I was an arrogant Aries. I don't know much about astrological signs. We approached things differently but we usually came up with the same answers and results.’
Regularly described as 'The man behind the man', Joe Adams was, for 45 years, instrumental in Ray Charles' musical life and work. At the same time, he developed his obvious talent for photography, capturing Ray at work on stage and in the studio, including some of the most significant performances of his career. Of course, Joe enjoyed unprecedented access to Ray's life out of the spotlight, photographing him backstage or aboard his private airplane, playing chess or relaxing in his office.
Coupled with an exclusive new text by Ray's many friends and contemporaries, these photographs document the rise of a legend, presented within a signed, hand-crafted volume, strictly limited to 2,500 copies worldwide and bound to the exceptional standards for which Genesis Publications prides itself.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GENESIS PUBLICATIONS
This month marks the 35th Anniversary of Genesis Publications and in honour of this momentous event we will be celebrating all yearlong with 35 different events, offers and surprises. The first of which is an astounding book and print offer:
Ten years ago we published
Hamburg Days
and to commemorate this collectable limited edition we have selected our favourite
Klaus Voorman signed print
and together with the limited edition book we are making the book-print set available at the very special price of £500 for one week only (offer ends Feb 8).
Hamburg Days
presents an unprecedented array of artwork and recollections: some 80,000 words and over 250 photographs, watercolours, drawings and paintings which bring to life the years when Astrid Kirchherr, Klaus Voormann and the young Liverpool lads first met. When not in the clubs, they would eat together in their favourite haunts, engage one another in conversation, roam the streets through the early hours, and even travel together, to the North Sea and later to Tenerife. In his Foreword George Harrison explains what made these formative years so special: a time which Astrid photographed, producing an archive of unsurpassed images seen here in its entirety; including ones previously unpublished and others rarely seen before.
"It's really good to see Astrid's great photos, and Klaus's new paintings put together in one set of books - with all the usual care from Genesis." George Harrison
To order your copy please telephone or email us directly - +44 (0) 1483 540970 or davidw@genesis-publications.com.
Shown above: The two volume limited edition book and print set.
The print (numbered and signed by the artist Klaus Voormann) features a young Paul and John at the Bambi-Kino, 1960.

GET BACK - SUBSCRIBER OFFER
The Beatles story, although synonymous with Liverpool, began in Germany as young men earning just £15 a week in the clubs of Hamburg and ended forty years ago this week on top of the Apple corps building in Savile Row, London, performing for free.
John: “I grew up in Hamburg, not Liverpool.”
This Friday (30th January) marks the 40th anniversary of one of The Beatle’s most legendary (and last live) performances -
The Rooftop Concert. An astounding 42 minute set, the display was loved by many, bringing part of the capital to a standstill, although nearby office workers complained about the noise, which led to the police ending the impromptu gig early. As they finished their third rendition of
Get Back, Lennon added:
“I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we've passed the audition.”
To celebrate this milestone Genesis are exclusively releasing a few very special copies of
Beatles In Germany
– the photographic history of the band’s formative years. These preview copies were produced in 1997 for promotional use and only a few are available to purchase (£275 plus p&p). Each one is numbered in roman numerals and features a white card sleeve (instead of a Perspex slipcase) and are additionally signed by Astrid Kirchherr - this is the first time they have been made available since the book’s launch and the offer is only available until Monday 2nd February. ELVIS ROCKS IRELAND
Genesis author Lew Allen is to exhibit his unique photographs of Elvis next week at the Leinster Gallery in Ireland. Entitled
Elvis & The Birth of Rock, Allen is showcasing 30 vintage prints alongside copies of his Genesis limited edition book of the same name.
Allen’s photographs, as featured in both the book and the show, were all taken between 1956 and 1958. Interspersed among the photographs of Elvis taken at the Cleveland Arena, are images from shows in Rochester, New York. Part of popular music bus tours through the States, they brought together many performers in one venue, which included several now-legendary groups on the bill such as Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers and Frankie Avalon.

All of the images on display are vintage silver gelatin prints and are the first prints ever made of these amazing images. Each is unique and available to purchase. To read more about the exhibition please visit the Leinster Gallery webpage,

BBC DARWIN SEASON 2009
This year is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the eminent naturalist Charles Darwin, and also 150 years since the original publication of his
Origin of the Species. During the course of the next twelve months the BBC is celebrating his life and work through a series of TV and radio programmes –
www.bbc.co.uk/darwin. In a BBC Radio 4 programme
Hunting The Beagle
maritime historian Robert Prescott tracks down the final resting place of the ship whose worldwide journey and notable stay at the Galapagos Islands would provide the inspiration for Darwin’s landmark theory of evolution.
One of Genesis’s first limited edition books is a facsimile record of that very first voyage penned by Darwin,
The Journal of a Voyage in HMS Beagle – 1831-1836. George Darwin, great grandson of Charles, has signed each copy and HRH The Prince of Wales provides a foreword:
“In having the courage to publish his revolutionary concept of the origin of the species Darwin joined a long line of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, philosophers and thinkers, whose radical theories transformed the course of human history.
Above all, the journal helps to show us something of Darwin’s innate humanity and kindness – the hallmark, in so many cases, of a true naturalist. I sincerely hope that this new
(1979)
edition of Darwin’s Journal will give the greatest possible pleasure to all those admirers of Darwin who are fortunate enough to acquire one of these rare copies.”
Just 20 copies remain in this edition of 500 - to read more and to order your copy, please

has now sold out with just two copies left in the edition that are sure to be snapped up today. This limited edition book, featuring stunning live shots and intimate moments backstage of the Rolling Stones touring throughout the Seventies, now makes it way to our illustrious Hall of Fame.

It was the first time Putland’s images had ever been published, exhibited, or even presented in such an exquisite form. ADVENTUROUS BEATLES TRACK UNEARTHED
Sir Paul McCartney has confirmed the existence of an unreleased Beatles track from 1967, one that many people believed was a myth until now. Sir Paul and George Harrison unearthed the track while they were researching the
Beatles Anthology, but at the time it was considered too adventurous and the track was vetoed from inclusion.
Paul McCartney: ‘I like it. It’s very simplistic, quite naïve. I like it because it’s The Beatles free, The Beatles going off piste.’
In an interview with
BBC Radio 4
to be broadcast this Thursday (20th November) Sir Paul talks about the making of the experimental track, which he was asked to produce for an electronic music festival during the Summer of Love:
‘All I want you to do is just wander around all the stuff
[in the studio],
bang it, shout, play it, it doesn't need to make any sense. Hit a drum then wander on to the piano, hit a few notes, just wander around.’

THIN WILD MERCURY: DYLAN BY SCHATZBERG
An exhibition of Jerry Schatzberg’s iconic images of Bob Dylan will go on display from this Thursday (21st November to 25th January) at the Proud Gallery, London. Schatzberg shot Dylan at a period in his development in the mid-Sixties as he made his legendary transition from acoustic to electric folk.
Bob Dylan: ‘The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on … the
Blonde On Blonde
album. It’s that thin, that wild mercury sound.’
Famous for shooting the
Blonde on Blonde
album cover, Schatzberg describes the circumstances behind that seminal image in his signed limited edition book, Thin Wild Mercury:
Jerry Schatzberg: ‘It was freezing and we were very cold. The frame he
[Dylan]
chose for the cover is blurred and out of focus. Of course everyone was trying to interpret the meaning, saying it must represent getting high or an LSD trip. It was none of the above; we were just cold and the two of us were shivering. There were other images that were sharp and in focus, but to his credit, Dylan liked that photograph.’

UNSEEN BEATLES CONCERT FOOTAGE UNCOVERED AFTER 44 YEARS
What is believed to be the only recording of a Kansas City Beatles gig from 1964 has been rediscovered by a fan who had forgotten he filmed it. Despite stringent filming restrictions on the day, Drew Dimmel took his father’s new movie camera to the concert and managed to grab some shots of the band on their first US tour. Upon taking the film home, Dimmel shut it in a drawer and forgot about it - only to find it still in its box just two months ago as he cleared out his parents’ home. The 8mm film reel, which goes to auction on November 4, is barely two minutes long, but is nevertheless expected to fetch upwards of £12,000.
The Kansas City gig at the Municipal Stadium was a controversial one. Thanks to the unpopularity of the Kansas City Baseball Team owner, Charles Finley, the local press had ordered a boycott of the concert and the stadium was half empty.
The Beatles 1964 US tour is captured in its entirety through the lens of the late Curt Gunther in the signed limited edition book
Mania Days.

STEVEN SPIELBERG & DAMIAN LEWIS JOIN THE RANKS!
Steven Spielberg has contributed a poignant Afterword to
Easy Company – In Photographs. Along with Tom Hanks, Spielberg produced the award-winning HBO series,
Band of Brothers, that presented Easy Company on screen. The producers asked the surviving veterans to advise on historical accuracy when re-telling the story of their journey from D-Day to the capture of Hitler’s ‘impenetrable’ fortress in the Alps, dubbed ‘The Eagles Nest’.
‘[Tom Hanks and I] reflected as we got to know these men that most of us had a friend or relative that had demonstrated the same selflessness, the same dedication to a concern larger than themselves when the nation’s need was greatest. In my case, it was my dad... Getting to know the Easy Company Band of Brothers gave me new perspectives on my father’s character and on his life and times before I came into being.’ Steven Spielberg [from his Afterword].
For the lead role of Easy’s commanding officer, Major Richard Winters, Spielberg and Hanks cast the English actor Damian Lewis. Besides signing all copies in the Deluxe edition of
Easy Company – In Photographs, Lewis has also contributed a fascinating new interview, to be included within every book.
‘There can be nothing more epic or heroic than what they did. I think the actions really do speak for themselves and these photos that you’ve found are unbelievably evocative. I can’t wait to see it fully bound and finished. It’s going to be a fantastic gift for people, or to have in your home.’ Damian Lewis

KATE SIMON INTERVIEWS FOR INTERVIEW
Genesis author Kate Simon is already one of the world's foremost portrait photographers, but now she's turning her attention to journalism. At the moment, she's acting as a contributing editor for the legendary Interview magazine, founded by Andy Warhol in 1969. In the August issue of the magazine she interviews legendary US comedian Richard Lewis; the article is published, of course, alongside portraits taken by her.
Kate's incredible photographs of Bob Marley are published by Genesis in
Rebel Music: Bob Marley and Roots Reggae, described by Bob's daughter Cedella as a 'classic'. Copies are still available, including a small number of 30th Anniversary copies that come with a signed, silver-gelatin print, made direct from the negative and as used in the making of the book. CAPTAIN COOK'S BOOMERANG
A boomerang collected by the explorer Captain James Cook is predicted to sell at auction for up to £60,000. Cook brought the boomerang back to England in 1771, but had no idea of its name or real purpose, believing it to be some kind of wooden sword. The first records of a boomerang in action date from the early nineteenth century, well after Cook's death, so it is likely the famous explorer never discovered the reality of his prize. The boomerang is to go to auction next month in London, along with two wooden clubs collected in the same expedition.
Genesis published the logs of both James Cook's legendary Voyages of Discovery. The first of the two hand bound books, detailing Cook's travels with the
HMS Endeavour, sold out to become a valuable collectible. The second, Cook's account of his journey aboard
HMS Resolution
through the South Pacific and across the Antarctic Circle, is still available to
order here.

BRIAN EPSTEIN'S MANAGEMENT CONTRACT FOR SALE
The Beatles' original management contract with Brian Epstein goes under the hammer this September and is expected to sell for a massive £250,000. It was originally signed by the boys in January 1962, with the fathers of Paul and George endorsing the document because their sons were under 21 at the time. Brian famously held back from endorsing the agreement until he had fulfilled his promise of a record contract, which he duly secured six months later and signed on October 1st 1962.
He would take 25% of earnings over £200 (approximately £3000 in today's money) per week and in return would 'undertake all necessary advertising and publicity for the Artists' and 'advise the Artists on all matters concerning clothes, make-up and the presentation and construction of the Artists' acts'.

BEATLES FOR SALE
A 30-minute tape of a Beatles recording session has sold for £9,800 at auction in the UK. The reel-to-reel recording was found in an attic and features The Beatles performing 10 songs, both their own and covers such as 'Honey Don't'. But the highlight is said to be their attempts to complete the recording of 'I'll Follow The Sun' during which Lennon and McCartney are frequently heard giggling and cracking jokes.
It is thought that the tape was made in 1964, when the band were riding the crest of a wave of popularity and high spirits and good humour were inevitable. That same year The Beatles toured the US for the first time to complete their musical domination of the globe, and the excitement of those times and the band's collective sense of fun are wonderfully captured by Curt Gunther's photographs of that tour, as presented in the Genesis limited edition Mania Days.

E. COMPANY REMEMBER NORMANDY 1944
A monument commemorating the heroism of Easy Company, 506th PIR, has been unveiled at Brecourt Manor, Normandy. It was here that the 'Band of Brothers' successfully destroyed a deadly gun emplacement firing onto the Utah beach landings during the early hours of D-Day. Far behind enemy-lines, the vastly out-numbered men later received Bronze and Silver Stars for their actions. Now, for the first time, Genesis will publish their recollections and personal photographs in a signed, historical limited edition book.
This title is due for release very soon. To register your interest in this limited edition, and receive preferential ordering options, please

MARTIN ACOUSTIC GUITARS CELEBRATE 175 YEARS
This year
C.F. Martin & Co.
celebrates 175 years of guitar building excellence. Coveted the world over, they are favoured by guitar legends such as Eric Clapton. The company's list of patrons are extensive - Bob Dylan had a Martin 1949 00-17, which he acquired in 1959. He writes about this in 'Chronicles':
Dylan:
'First thing I did was go trade in my electric guitar, which would have been useless for me, for a double-O Martin acoustic. The man at the store traded me even and I left carrying the guitar in its case. I would play this guitar for the next couple of years or so.'
This 'couple of years' happens to be before his official recording days, but the guitar can be heard on the Minnesota tapes and some other early tapes, including 'Wade in the Water', from the Minnesota Hotel Tape, which was released on Live 1961-2000.
Jerry Schatzberg, author of 'Thin Wild Mercury', was there when Dylan turned in his acoustic guitar for a Fender Stratocaster. He shot the cover for Dylan's explosive album, 'Blonde on Blonde', featuring what Dylan called "that thin wild mercury sound".
Schatzberg:
'The frame he chose for the cover is blurred and out of focus. Of course everyone was trying to interpret the meaning, saying it must represent getting high or an LSD trip.'

CSN RETURN WITH FIRST STUDIO ALBUM SINCE 1994
Due in 2009 and produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, CSN will come together in the studio for the first time in 14 years to produce an album of their favourite songs. It will not feature a single CSN lyric. Instead, a list of 60 proposed songs were whittled down by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash through a long series of discussions with Rubin.
Graham Nash: 'He
(Rubin)
wants to do an album of all the songs we love, all the songs we wished we'd written. It's brilliant from this point of view because we usually wait five years to record an album.'
Crosby, Stills and Nash have been involved in a number of projects recently. With the release of the documentary 'CSNY: Deja vu' on Friday (25th July) along with their insightful input on Henry Diltz's 'California Dreaming' book, they are certainly giving their fans exactly what they want - more.

SGT PEPPER'S DRUM SELLS FOR OVER £500,000
The drum that takes centre stage on the cover of The Beatle's
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
album, has been sold at auction for over £500,000. On a commission from the album sleeve's designer Sir Peter Blake, Joe Ephgrave, a fairground artist, painted the drum's skin in an imaginative circus style with such brilliance that it inspired a wealth of imitations.
Sir George Martin remembers the process involved in the making of this sleeve in his signed limited edition, 'Summer of Love - The Making of Sgt. Pepper', available now from Genesis.
Sir George Martin ('Summer of Love'):
'Paul's original thought was to have The Beatles in a park being given a formal presentation by the Lord Mayor or some such character. They were to be situated behind a huge floral clock. There could be a wonderful magic crowd in this imaginary park - an imaginary audience watching and listening.'

STILLS & HENDRIX 'LOST' ALBUM FOUND
It has been reported that Stephen Stills has found an album he recorded with Jimi Hendrix. Previously lost, Stills admits that even he was unaware of its existence. A prolific recorder in the Sixties and Seventies, Stills is set to release the album through CSN band-mate Graham Nash.
Graham Nash: 'In the Seventies, he
(Stills)
was a recording fool. He just found a bloody album he made with Jimi Hendrix.'
Stephen Stills (from 'California Dreaming'): 'Jimi Hendrix and I had a secret plan of having a new band and no one ever new about it but then I found out years later that Mitch Mitchell knew because he wrote in his book, God bless him.'
Russ Kunkel (from 'California Dreaming'): 'Stephen Stills was one of the only people that Ahmet Ertegun gave a PO number to because he believed so much in his talent. So Stephen could go to any studio in the world, hire musicians and record - and he took advantage of it.'

THE WHO - 'SLIP KID' EXCLUSIVE
This Saturday, 12th July, The Who will be played tribute to at the VH1 Rock Honours show by performances from artists including Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters. The highlight is sure to be when The Who take to the stage and close the evening with a 40-minute rendition of 'Slip Kid', their first live performance of the song in over 30 years. Producer Bill Curbishley who was touring with the boys at this time in 1976 recollects what it was like.
Curbishley: 'The superlatives were now becoming commonplace and the consistency of the performance won them the title of the 'world's finest rock band'.'
'Looking back now, it seems incredible that Seattle on October 14th was to prove to be Keith Moon's last concert with the Who in the States. On that night they ripped apart a crowd of 15,000 delirious fans leaving the USA and 1976 exhausted and on a high, carrying with them one complete policeman's uniform purchased from a dazed and confused cop.'
The above is an excerpt from Bill's insightful introduction to 'The Who Live', the signed limited edition from Genesis.

DAVID BOWIE: LAST CHANCE
'Moonage Daydream', by David Bowie and Mick Rock, is close to selling out for ever. Fewer than 50 copies remain of the 2,500 that were made.
Released in 2002, both fans and press were genuinely astonished by this book when it was first released. The Washington Post described as 'a masterpiece' and Elle magazine as 'simply beautiful'.
Since that time, a trade edition was produced for David and Mick that featured reduced content and vastly scaled back production values. Many fans bought both - the hand-signed limited edition for their collection, and a 'mass-market' version to thumb through.
This is possibly a last chance to order the original, limited edition book. Once out of print, it will no longer exist except on the second-hand, resale market where it is sure to command a much higher price as a fine-art collector's piece. As GQ magazine wrote: 'Few books are this lovingly produced.'

LOST INTERVIEW FOUND - THE BEATLES 1964
A nine-minute tape of the Fab Four recorded for Scottish Television in April 1964 has been recovered from a damp London garage. The band are interviewed for Roundup, a children's current affairs show, and gives an insight into the how Lennon and McCartney first met and how they wrote songs together.
'Sometimes we write them on old pianos or anything that's lying around, guitars and things. Normally we sit down and try and bash one out.'
McCartney
They had previously appeared on the same show a year earlier (January 1963) performing
Please, Please Me
- which a month later would become their first UK Number One single. Michael Ward was there on that day, Feb 13 1963, and a stunning print and book set of his images and recollections is available in 'A Day In The Life'.
The entire 'Lost Beatles Interview' will air today at 13.30 on BBC Radio 4 (and again at 15.30 on Saturday 5 July).

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY ANNOUNCES FINAL TOUR
In 1966 The Beatles stopped touring. Forty years later Sir Paul McCartney is doing the same. This time McCartney is bowing out in style with an epic 100-date global tour that is sure to be a sell-out.
Sir Paul has chosen to end his touring career to spend more time with his four-year-old daughter Beatrice and to 'settle down' into semi-retirement.
The announcement has come as bitter-sweet news to many of McCartney's fans who are pleased for another chance to see him playing live but are upset that it may be for the last time. The farewell tour is expected to span over two years with dates in Australia, Canada, the UK and USA and could begin as soon as autumn 2008.
If his most recent concerts are anything to go by - such as his crowd-pleasing performance for the Liverpool '08 celebrations last week - fans can expect some spectacular shows with surprising set lists.

D-DAY - 64 YEARS ON
Friday June 6th marked the 64th anniversary of D-Day, the day on which 75,215 British and Canadian troops and 57,500 US troops invaded Nazi-occupied Europe. To mark the anniversary a remembrance celebration is held every year in Normandy, centering upon the town of Ste-Mere-Eglise. It is a time for the courageous acts of the troops to be remembered and an emotional return for many war veterans. It is also a chance for the public to engage with re-enactions of the dramatic events of 64 years ago.
The invasion of Normandy was the largest amphibious assault ever launched. It involved five army divisions in the first assault; 7,000 ships and 11,000 aircraft. Several airborne divisions played a particularly crucial role in the opening phase of Operation Overlord which began just minutes past midnight on June 6th 1944. Amongst the most famed is Easy Company, 506th PIR. The company's actions saved countless lives as their exploits behind enemy lines severed chances of German counter attacks and rendered gun batteries inoperable.
To pay tribute to Easy Company, Genesis publications is producing a stunning photographic and narrative history of the company, providing fascinating insight into their actions. 'Easy Company 506th PIR in Photographs' will follow each phase of their training and campaigns. The book also features the private photographs, diary extracts, original maps and previously unseen records of Major Richard D Winters. This beautiful limited edition is a poignant way to commemorate the anniversary of both D-Day and the incredible history of Easy Company.

THE BEATLES - 'ALL TOGETHER NOW' AND 'CONCERT FOR GEORGE' - SPECIAL SCREENINGS
The Liverpool Culture Company will present the UK premiere of the documentary 'All Together Now' tonight (Friday 30th) followed with a special screening of 'Concert For George' tomorrow (Saturday 31st) at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) as part of the ongoing celebrations in Liverpool as European Capital of Culture.
'All Together Now' tells the story of the collaboration between The Beatles and the Cirque du Soleil to produce the 'Love' stage show. By using new intimate interviews with Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison as well as directors Sir George Martin and son Giles Martin, it gives an intriguing insight into how the Beatles music was fused with the aesthetic stagecraft of the Cirque du Soleil.
In 2002 the 'Concert For George' again brought together some of the world's finest performers for one unprecedented night of celebration. Rock stars, comedians and classical musicians in both the Indian and European tradition all took to the stage of The Albert Hall in perfect harmony, united by one thing: a love for their friend George Harrison who passed away exactly one year before.

FIRST LITERARY FESTIVAL FOR THE BEATLES STORY, LIVERPOOL
Throughout May The Beatles Story, Liverpool's Beatles-themed visitor attraction on Albert Dock, is hosting its first festival of paperback writers. Celebrating the host of works that have chronicled all aspects of The Beatles' lives, the main attraction is a series of evenings 'in conversation' with some of the authors. Mark Lewisohn started the series on May 14th and discussed his insatiable passion for The Beatles and his latest project, a definitive history of The Beatles, which will be released in three volumes over the next 12 years.
Mark Lewisohn:
'To say The Beatles were just a pop group is like saying Mozart was only another composer, and Churchill just another politician.'
Genesis Publications started its relationship with all things fab with the publication of I Me Mine in 1980 since when we've continued to bring unique and unseen material of The Beatles to our subscribers. The latest Beatles title, Summer of Love, looks at the making of Sgt. Peppers through the recollections of producer Sir George Martin.

The Cosmos Rocks, it will be released in September. Handling vocals will be Paul Rodgers, formerly of Free and Bad Company, who toured with Queen as lead singer in 2005.
Brian May: 'It was clear that if we were to go out again, we needed some new stuff. It needed to be an ongoing, living, evolving, organic unit. This album has done that.'

THE WHO - WHAT CAN BE SAID OR SHOWN THAT HASN'T BEEN DONE BEFORE?
It's a question asked by The Who fans worldwide. 'You might be surprised,' answers Goldmine Magazine in their recent review of the Genesis classic,
Maximum Who. The article continues:
Like any other luxury volume from Genesis Publications,
Maximum Who
is a collector's dream. Its heavy, gilt-edged pages are a treat, and the photos - especially those in color - look absolutely gorgeous. You can tell that time, love and attention went into crafting this book.
The fun, however, comes from the band-mates' provided comments that accompany the photos, such as Roger Daltrey's lament of a photo taken at Surrey Docks, when the band was pushing its pop art look: 'My failed Steve Marriott haircut - due to curls.'
The full article can be found in their May 24th issue or in the 'On the Bookshelf' section of their website later this week.
This is the start of a series of reviews by the American magazine and website who, after seeing a Genesis title a few months ago, immediately asked to review more of our signed limited editions.

ELVIS IN ENGLAND
Theatre producer Bill Kenwright has recently revealed that Elvis visited England in 1958 and was shown the sights by British singer Tommy Steele. Previously, the only officially recognised visit was in 1960, comprising a brief stopover at Prestwick Airport, Scotland. The Graceland estate is verifying these facts and has admitted that there are areas of Elvis-s life that are undocumented.
Elvis-s life will always hold a special fascination. Genesis recently published
Elvis and the Birth of Rock
by Lew Allen, which includes a collection of unique images taken at the Cleveland Arena in 1956, that lay hidden in Allen-s basement until recently. A newspaper strike in Cleveland meant Allen was the only photographer there and his often-candid images show an Elvis on the cusp of super stardom.
Signed, bound in blue suede and featuring a commentary from Lew, Bob and Mike McCartney,

CHARLES DARWIN - COMPLETE PRIVATE PAPERS AVAILABLE ONLINE
Available for the first time to the general public, Charles Darwin-s personal papers have been released in their entirety by the University of Cambridge (UK). Included in this vast collection are notes from the voyage of The Beagle. His first round-the-world surveying voyage took him to the Galapagos Islands where his observations of local wildlife would eventually lead him to a theory that would forever change mankind-s understanding of itself. (See
www.darwin-online.org.uk)
Genesis Publications- own evolution began with facsimile reproductions of the western world-s most important journals of exploration and discovery, including Charles Darwin-s
Journal of a Voyage in HMS Beagle. Published in 1979, it is a complete facsimile of the original journal in Darwin's own handwriting. By kind permission of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Genesis took the original document to the Cambridge University Library where, with infinite care and skill, it was unbound by library staff to be photographed.
Limited to 500 numbered copies, the authoritative introduction is written by Professor RD Keynes, ScD, FRS and each copy is signed by George Darwin, great grandson of Charles Darwin. To order your copy, please

WE WILL ROCK YOU - AGAIN
Brian May has announced that there will be a sequel to the hit musical -We Will Rock You-. Since its London opening in 2002, around five million people worldwide have enjoyed the Ben Elton-penned show which is set 300 years in the future and features nearly 30 classic Queen tracks.
Queen was the rarest of breeds: both genius in the studio and utterly brilliant performing live. The signed limited edition book
Killer Queen, by Genesis Publications, captures that potent, magical mix. Through Mick Rock-s archive of Queen photographs, many of which have never been published before, it takes us from their explosive breakthrough gig in 1973 at Imperial College to their infamous free concert in Hyde Park, 1976.
BRIAN MAY:
-Mick Rock is, and always was, a class act. We met, he and we young Queenies, at a point in our careers where the skies had opened up and creatively the scope of our journey was limitless - very exciting times.-

CBGB REOPENS ITS DOORS TO JOHN VARVATOS
April 8 saw the launch of John Varvatos- latest boutique at the site of the now legendary CBGB club at 315 Bowery, New York. The club that came a long way from its Country, Blue Grass and Blues roots to become the epicentre of punk rock, hosting bands including The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Television, Patti Smith Group and Richard Hell and the Voidoids.
Within the concert-poster plastered and graffiti-covered walls, John Varvatos has made sure the space retains its original feel by creating a stage for in-store performances amidst his own collection of rare vinyl, picture discs, sporstwear and accessories. BRIAN ROYLANCE IN MEMORIAM (1945-2005)
To commemorate the passing of Brian Roylance, on his birthday this year (4th April) Genesis Publications is donating a football factory to the young men and women of Zambia. Brian had a well-known love of both football and Africa and we are sure he would be pleased to be associated with such a project.
A football factory provides young Africans a business opportunity: to replace imported plastic soccer balls with durable leather balls, locally made, ecologically friendly and easily mended. Employing 20 people and producing 600 balls a week they fill their order books by delivering to local schools.
In addition to the obvious benefits of sport and exercise, every ball carries an educational message about HIV/AIDS, malaria or TB, as appropriate for the area. Individual soccer balls are available to purchase, for a school or class, and can be ordered now from
www.goodgifts.org.
Over the coming years we intend to support more projects overseas including the building of a village library in India, which will of course contain a selection of Genesis titles.

SHINE A LIGHT - THE ROLLING STONES & MARTIN SCORSESE
Shine A Light, the Rolling Stones- eagerly awaited motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese, is to be released worldwide this April. It starts on 2nd April with the UK premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square being beamed by satellite to 100 specially selected cinemas across the country, then follows on the 4th with a general release at the massive IMAX cinemas across the USA. For more information visit the official websites
www.shinealightmovie.com
(US) and
www.shinealightmovie.co.uk
(UK).
Directed by legendary Oscar winner Martin Scorsese, filmed over two nights at the Beacon Theater, New York - from 29th October to 1st November 2006 - and interspersed with archive footage,
Shine A Light
takes you up front and backstage with The Rolling Stones.
Scorsese hoped the film -might give some sense of what it-s like as a working band on stage, for generations to come, for them to see this and appreciate who the band are.- Talking about the band-s performance that night, Keith Richards has said: -Once we-re up there it-s let-s go, we-re The Rolling Stones, man, we want to give them the best show we-ve got and we want to give ourselves the best show we-ve got. We always want to impress ourselves.- And it would seem that, yet again, they-ve done so. The film has already been shown at The Berlin Film Festival where critics praised it for -capturing the very essence of the Stones in performance-.
Genesis Publications has published many books about the Rolling Stones and were honored to work with them directly in creating the limited edition book
TOTA -75. In 1975 Mick Jagger had a similar vision to that behind
Shine A Light: he wanted to show the fans just what it was like to tour as The Rolling Stones. The band employed Christopher Simon Sykes to document an entire 40-date tour and, 30 years later, through nearly 500 photographs, an extensive tour diary, set lists, tour schedules, postcards and notes from the tour manager,
TOTA
is the definitive behind-the-scenes account of their 1975 tour of the Americas.

A DAY IN THE LIFE - 45 YEARS AGO TODAY
On February 19, 1963, photographer Michael Ward spent the day shooting photographs of a little-known group for Honey Magazine. With them he traipsed around the band's hometown of Liverpool scouting for good back drops for his photographs, before retreating to their manager's record shop to escape the cold, and then to a local basement club to prepare for and play a gig.
At the time it didn't seem a particularly momentous 24 hours to Michael, but that day the earth shifted on its axis. For the four lads from Liverpool it was one of the last days they would ever be able to walk the streets of their hometown with only the occasional smiling fan to help subvert their photographer's efforts. Or play their songs live to a quietly attentive audience. Or, indeed, go anywhere without danger of being mobbed. The band Michael Ward was photographing was The Beatles, and as they prepared to go on stage that evening at The Cavern Club, with Michael still taking pictures, they learnt that they had just gone to Number One in the UK charts for the first time. Cue Beatlemania.
Only a few of the shots Michael took that day have ever been seen since. Now 24 of them are available as part of Genesis Publications' first ever signed, limited edition portfolio. 'A Day In The Life' quite literally represents one day with The Beatles and features 24 varnished lithographs and an accompanying book signed by Michael Ward, all housed in a hand-made Indian-silk Solander box.

In addition these prints, along with the portfolio, are now on display at Square One Gallery in London where they are causing much excitement. Click on the links below to see what the press are saying:

EAGLES PICK UP FIRST GRAMMY IN 29 YEARS
The Eagles have won their first Grammy in 29 years. 'Best Country Song Vocal Performance By A Duo or Group' was awarded to them for their single 'So Long', the debut release from their recent album, Long Road Out of Eden.
This is the band's fifth Grammy. They were awarded their first in early 1976 for 'Lyin' Eyes'.
Don Henley
commented "I was 28 years old then. I'm 60 now. I always secretly hoped that we could pull off something like this, but I had almost given up. This win feels really good - and it's in a whole different field than we were in before."
The band will have to wait for next year's awards in order to see whether Long Road Out of Eden will collect anything - the album was not released in time to qualify for this year's nominations.
California Dreaming: Memories and Visions of LA 1966-1975, which features photographs of and commentary from the Eagles, is available now.

ALAN MESSER VISITS GENESIS
Nashville-based photographer Alan Messer has recently been in the UK to finish the photo-edit of his forthcoming limited edition book on Johnny Cash.
Published by Genesis Publications in collaboration with the estate of Johnny Cash, the book will feature a mixture of iconic portraits and previously unseen photographs of The Man in Black taken between 1976 and his death in 2003. Many of the images are remarkably candid and feature Cash with his family and friends who will also be contributing their thoughts and memories to run alongside the photographs.
Sifting through Alan's remarkable archive has been a pleasure, but choosing which photographs to leave out has been almost painful at times. However, what--s not in doubt is that the final picture edit is a collection of quite incredible photographs.
The book, in typical Genesis style, will be printed on fine art papers and hand-bound in leather. Strictly limited to 2,000 copies only, it is due to be published this summer.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB MARLEY
Genesis Publications is pleased once more to pay tribute to the genius of Bob Marley, on the day that would have been his 63rd birthday.
Marley is an artist whose music can truly claim to be timeless. Songs like 'No Woman, No Cry', 'Redemption Song' and 'Exodus' have become passionate anthems of hope and liberation to millions around the world. His visage alone has become a symbol of faith and rebellion. Perhaps his most succinct epitaph is the title of his posthumous compilation album - Legend.
Last year, 2007, marked the 30th anniversary of the release of Marley's classic Exodus, undoubtedly one of the greatest albums of all time. In its honour, Genesis Publications has released 30 fine art anniversary copies of Rebel Music: Bob Marley and Roots Reggae.
These special roman numeraled copies come with a unique silver-gelatin archival print as created for and used in the making of the limited edition book. Individually signed by Kate Simon, every print is extremely valuable and collectable - each is, in effect, a limited edition of one.

GENESIS REMEMBERS DAN FOGELBERG AND JOHN STEWART
|
It is with regret that Genesis Publications acknowledges the loss of two great musical talents: Dan Fogelberg and John Stewart. We were honoured that both musicians were contributors to our recently-published limited edition, California Dreaming, by Henry Diltz. We would like to offer our condolences to their families and friends.
|
Dan Fogelberg: 1951-2007
Born into a musical family, singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg briefly resisted an apparently inevitable pursuit of music before succumbing with the creation of his critically acclaimed debut album, Home Free. In the course of the extensive career that followed, Fogelberg recorded gold and platinum albums across a wide variety of musical genres, addressing both personal and social concerns in his songwriting. He had a number of hit singles, including -Leader of the Band- and -Run for the Roses-.
Dan Fogelberg passed on December 16, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Jean.
|
Dan Fogelberg
|
John Stewart: 1939-2008
John Stewart also enjoyed notable success as a songwriter and perhaps his most famous composition was -Daydream Believer- which was taken to the top of the charts by The Monkees in 1967. Stewart was a key player in the American folk revival of the Sixties during his seven years as a member of The Kingston Trio and after the group disbanded in 1967, he went on to create 45 solo albums. His songs have been recorded by numerous artists, including Joan Baez, Nanci Griffiths and Roseanne Cash.
John Stewart passed on January 19, 2008 and is survived by his wife Buffy Ford and their four children.
