Michael Putland - Portfolio 1 - Classic British Rock

INDEX

Seven legendary figures of rock music photographed by Michael Putland.
A limited edition of 30 sets

Genesis Publications was the first publisher ever to issue a book of Michael Putland's wonderful shots of The Rolling Stones. Pleased to Meet You was received to great acclaim upon publication, and his reputation as one of the world's greatest music photographers continues to climb.

Now Michael Putland has issued a rock photography portfolio of the very highest quality. The images are platinum palladium prints (see below), the most valued of all photographic images. Each shot is 16 x 12 inches (30.5 x 40.6cm), has been crafted by Paul and Max Caffell at 31 Studio, England, and is presented in a buckskin portfolio with matching slip case. Attached to each image is a personal memory of the shoot in Michael's own words, hand written by calligrapher Ann Bowen.

This remarkable portfolio will be limited to just 30 sets worldwide (plus two Artist's Proofs) and therefore will grace the very finest collections of rock'n'roll photography. The first five sets are offered for sale at US$8000 with later sets to be offered at a higher price.

PLATINUM PALLADIUM PRINTS offer the ultimate in photographic permanence; this, coupled with their subtle tonal range and the tactile quality of an image made on hand-made paper, makes the platinum print the most valued of all photographic images. 31 Studio make their prints using the original platinotype method as devised by William Willis in 1876. The process involves contact printing to negative using ultra-violet light for the exposure. To get the most from the original camera negative we first make an enlarged inter-positive and then an inter-negative. Only this way can a negative be made that will bring out all the subtleties of tone for which the platinum-palladium process is renowned. To achieve the ultimate in permanence they use hand-made pure cotton papers; Michael Putland's portfolio shots are printed on 300gsm Aquarel Arches, a beautiful deckle-edged off-white paper.

About Michael Putland

Michael Putland was born in 1947 at Harrow-on-the-Hill near London. Encouraged by his uncle, he began shooting at age nine, and upon leaving school at sixteen he started work at a London studio where he assisted in advertising, fashion and architectural photography. Michael was privileged to work with Louis Klementaski, the legendary motor racing photographer, during this period. After briefly assisting Time/Life photographer Walter Curtain, he decided to go out on his own, sharing a studio with two friends and eventually securing work with the music magazine "Disc & Music Echo". His first assignment was Mick Jagger.

He went on to photograph John Lennon and Elton John among others, before moving to "Sounds" magazine and continuing to photograph the biggest names in music. He began to travel extensively and worked for most of the major record companies, especially CBS, Warner, Elektra, Atlantic, Polydor, RCA and EMI. Michael relocated to New York in 1977, where he continued his record company and editorial assignments, shooting artists as diverse as Billy Joel, The Clash and the Bee Gees.

Whilst in New York he founded the photo agency Retna and after returning to London in the early Eighties, he opened the London branch and continued to shoot mainly musicians, including Madonna and George Michael. He has recently handed management of Retna over to his long-standing business partner, Julie Grahame, allowing himself more time for his first love: photography. Whilst his current work is still predominantly portraiture, his sitters are likely to be classical, jazz or world musicians and lifestyle subjects.
