Lost 'Jean Genie' Footage Unearthed
Retired BBC cameraman John Henshall has unearthed unique footage of David Bowie's 1973 Top of the Pops performance of 'Jean Genie'. Videotapes from TV shows were routinely wiped in the early Seventies, and the footage was thought lost until Henshall unveiled his personal copy at the British Film Institute last week, Sunday 11th December. Bowie's performance will be aired on Wednesday 21st December for the first time in 38 years.
'I couldn't believe that I was the only one with it. I just
thought you wouldn't be mad enough to wipe a tape like that'- John Henshall
Bowie's 'Jean Genie' days are captured in forthcoming Genesis limited edition SPEED OF LIFE, with previously unseen photographs by Sukita that trace Bowie's career from 1972 to the present day. Click here to register your interest...
