Concert for Bangladesh - 40 Years Anniversary

In 1971 George Harrison was so moved by a request from Ravi Shankar to help the people of Bangladesh, where a humanitarian crisis was unfolding, that he orchestrated what would be the first benefit concert of its kind. The Concert for Bangladesh on the 1st August 1971 was a sell out and has raised millions of dollars for UNICEF.

Ravi and George recall how it came about in  RAGA MALA:

'The idea occurred to me of giving a concert to raise money to help these refugees - something on a bigger scale than normal. While I was thinking of this, George Harrison was in Los Angeles. He would come to my house in the morning and spend time there, and he understood what I was going through. I asked him frankly, 'George can you help me?' He was really moved and said, 'Yes, something should be done.' - Ravi Shankar

'I said, 'OK, I'll go on the show and I'll get some other people to come and help. We'll try and make it into a big show, and maybe we can make a million dollars instead of a few thousand.' So I got on the telephone trying to round people up. We pinpointed the days which were astrologically good, and we found Madison Square Garden was open on one of those days - 1st August.' - George Harrison

The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF have created a video highlighting the impact of the concert, see below:

Ravi Shankar has led an incredible life documented in his Genesis autobiography, RAGA MALA, edited by George Harrison and published as a signed limited edition. He recounts a remarkable journey, from humble beginnings, seven years studying the sitar, to spectacular performances at Monterey, Woodstock and the Concert for Bangladesh.

It was thirty years later that Ravi would be at a very different concert, honouring the life of his dear friend George Harrison at the CONCERT FOR GEORGE, once again bringing together some of the world's finest musicians, this time to pay tribute to George who had passed away exactly one year before.

The Autobiography of Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar is the world's foremost sitar-virtuoso and composer, the man christened by George Harrison as the 'Godfather of World Music', who spearheaded the international spread of Indian culture. He has a remarkable story to tell, and he brings to the task the same contrasting qualities that make him as uncommon a man as a musician: that mixture of charm and candour, of dignity and humility, of deep spirituality and wide-eyed, impish fun.
