A closer look at the FACES book binding

Today we have been taking a close look at leather samples from the Kano and Sokoto regions of Nigeria. These goatskins have beautiful natural grains. The tanning process follows a time honoured tradition. Historically, these hides were transported by camel across the Sahara desert for trading in Morocco, and this is how the 'morocco' book binding term originated.

Goatskins are tanned and finished by dry drumming. Then hand finished to give flat or smooth pebbly grains. The leathers can be hand polished to give a deeper shade and may be further dyed to our requirements.

In this instance, we're looking for a specific kind of red to complete Ronnie Wood's FACES book cover design. We're also finalising our choice of suede for each of the FACES Deluxe copies.
